Fix HDCP Compliant display error when watching Netflix Video in Safari on Mac

Issue: If you are facing issue with playing Netflix content through Safari since upgrading to Yosemite / El Capitan and you don't have a secondary display connected. Specifically, Netflix will start to play the content and then display an error after a few seconds. The error reads "Whoops, something went wrong... display error. There appears to be a display problem. Please ensure your monitor is HDCP compliant and is not mirror using AirPlay."

Software and OS Affected: Safari 8.0 and 9.0 on OS X Yosemite and above.
Solution: This issue has obviously nothing to do with the Monitor being HDCP compliant because most of the monitor these days are HDCP compliant, still you have to be sure if your's is. My monitor is HDCP compliant (HP ZR30W) and it's the only monitor connected to my 2014 MacPro.

As per the Netflix, if you experience the error code S7363-1266-48444350 or receives HDCP compliant display error while watching Netflix videos through safari on your Mac computer, it's typically caused by an unsupported monitor or screen or you have Airplay turned on. Follow the steps on the post How to Turn AirPlay Off. HDCP is purposely disabled via AirPlay for copy-protection. Apple only supports playback on internal monitors or through HDCP compatible monitors. Follow the troubleshooting steps below to resolve the issue.

1. Disconnect your computer from your external monitor and try playing a movie or TV show again. If this resolves your issue, it's likely that your external monitor or TV does not support HDCP.
2. We have found that using DisplayLink software can cause issues when watching Netflix. Remove the software by following the steps below:
  • Quit AirServer from Activity Monitor.
  • Select the Finder icon from the Dock at the bottom of the screen.
  • Select Applications.
  • Drag the DisplayLink app to the Trash.
  • Right click the trash icon and select Empty Trash.
  • Try Netflix again.
3. Restart your computer. Once restarted, try Netflix again.

Remove any software which are used to transfer or convert video such as Supertube HD, Cinema Display, AirVideo, Adobe-Air, Aimersoft,AirParrot, etc., 

Real Solution to HDCP Compliant monitor error while watching Netflix on Safari


This all happened due to the enforcement of HTML 5 in Safari. Last year Netflix released video streaming in HTML5 in Safari on Yosemite to Save battery power and reduce processor usage. Apple implemented the Media Source Extensions (MSE) using their highly optimized video pipeline on OS X. This lets you watch Netflix in buttery smooth 1080p without hogging your CPU or draining your battery. In fact, this allows you to get up to 2 hours longer battery life on a MacBook Air streaming Netflix in 1080p - that’s enough time for one more movie!

Apple also implemented the Encrypted Media Extensions (EME) which provides the content protection needed for premium video services like Netflix. 

During initial days, this errors occurred due to Safari defaulting to HTML5 vs using Silverlight like it did in Mavericks. So, if you wanted to use Safari, you had to set the Netflix video playback setting back to silverlight. Which could be done by going into, Account >> your profile >> Playback settings on Netflix.com and there, uncheck the bottom option (prefer HTML5 instead of Silverlight), you would be able to play movies again and obviously, you had to have Silverlight in your computer.This would revert to Silverlight and will AirPlay fine in Safari.You just need to make sure the Silverlight plugin is enabled and updated and does not have any issue.

  • From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Security tab.
  • Now click Website Settings to the right of:  Internet plug-ins
  • Select Silverlight on the left then select Allow or Ask from the:  When visitng other websites pop up menu on the right.
  • If you want to use HTML5, just leave the setting for HTML5 on in Netflix and use Chrome, Firefox, etc.


How to fix HDCP Display Error for Netflix

This issue does not occur on all the Mac Machine with Yosemite and above but limited to some of them. So first of all make sure your software and Mac is up to date. If you still have problem follow the steps below.

1. Try allowing Silverlight to run always and also set to run in unsafe mode by following the next steps

Go to Safari > Preferences > Security > Website Settings (plugins) > Click Silverlight and select Allow Always, then Run in Unsafe Mode - then restart safari
and play Netflix and it should work.
2. Start using Chrome or Firefox to watch Netflix

Though, most of the Netflix users won't like this option. But it works flawlessly on Chrome or Firefox. You may experience a little slower playback rate but it can be overcome by making sure the Widevine CDM plugin by Google Inc. is updated.

3. Change your user agent each time you want to use Netflix on Safari


This will trick Netflix into thinking your using one of those browsers the selected user agent belongs to, and will use silverlight plugin.

Safari only sets the user agent for that one tab so none of your other tabs are affected. It's also reset when you close the tab, so if you were to open Netflix in a new tab it would be using the default user agent.So you have to change the user agent each time you want to open Netflix.Here is how you can change the user agent of Safari.

a. First of all Enable Develop Menu in Safari
  • Launch Safari, located at /Applications/Safari.
  • Open Safari's Preferences by selecting 'Safari, Preferences' from the menu.
  • Click the 'Advanced' tab.

  • Place a check mark next to 'Show Develop menu in menu bar.
b. Click on Develop Menu,Navigate to User Agent and change it to a prior version of Safari or Change the User Agent to Firefox - Mac.

Try to Load Netflix now and it should be working fine.

Note:- User Agent: The user agent is a string of text the browser sends to the web server hosting the web page. If you've ever visited a web page that proclaimed that Safari wasn't supported, this is how the site knew what browser you were using. In most cases, “not supported” is nonsense, and using this menu item you can change the user agent to mimic one from a different browser. You may be amazed how many times a web page that doesn’t work suddenly does, just by changing the user agent.

4. Disconnect additional hardware

Disconnect from computer any third party hardware that supports any external display or display mirroring directly or indirectly, like wireless adapter, secondary display, Cinema Display, HDMI cable or adapter, Thunderbolt(Mini-display port) to HDMI adapter , then try to run Netflix again and it should work.

5.  Calibrate the Display

Try calibrating the display once as it has stopped this problem for several users. Click on the Apple icon on top left hand corner of the screen select System Preferences>Monitor>Calibrate.. .just use the defaults. Check the Netflix again once calibrated.

6. Quit iTunes, Quick Time player, and other apps and then try watching the Netflix videos.

7. Quit or disconnect any Remote desktop sharing Software

If you are connected to or currently running any Screen sharing, Remote Desktop or Remote assistance software like Logmein Rescue ( LMI Rescue), Teamviewer, Go ToAssist, Ammy admin, Citrix, VPN Server or Ultra VNC. Quit or disconnect from such program and then try playing the Netflix videos.

What is Safe Mode and How to start your Mac in Safe Mode?

You can use safe mode to help you resolve issues that might keep your Mac from completely starting up.

What is safe mode?

Safe mode (sometimes called safe boot) is a way to start up your Mac so that it performs certain checks, and prevents some software from automatically loading or opening. Starting your Mac in safe mode does the following:


  • Verifies your startup disk, and attempts to repair directory issues if needed
  • Only essential kernel extensions are loaded- (a.k.a. ketxs, or hardware and software drivers), No third party items 
  • Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically
  • Disables user-installed fonts 
  • Deletes font caches, Kernel cache and other system cache files
  • Together, these changes can help resolve or isolate issues related to your startup disk. 

And it's very simple to start your Mac in Safe Mode, either using your keyboard or by entering a command in Terminal.We will learn different way of starting your Mac in Safe Mode later in this post.

When and why should we start Mac in Safe Mode?

When you have some problem with your mac the first troubleshooting you do is restart the Mac.
Most of the time, your Mac just works after restarting.

But there will be times when a rogue app, a misbehaving service, outdated caches and other issue will cause your Mac to slow, stop starting up or exhibit other unwanted symptoms. Thankfully, Apple has provided a way to boot OS X in Safe Mode.

Although booting in Safe Mode on a daily basis—or whenever an insignificant problem arises— isn’t recommended, there are definitely instances when starting up in Safe Mode could be your last resort.

Here are some of the typical scenarios:

If your Mac doesn’t finish starting up—Certain issues might keep your Mac from completely starting up and using Safe Mode can help you resolve them.

If an app is causing issues— An app you recently installed might be the culprit, especially if it came outside the Mac App Store. Starting up in Safe Mode might help isolate the misbehaving app as it prevents certain software from automatically loading or opening.

If your Mac is running slow— Just like Windows, your Mac also creates temporary files and various caches over time which might slow down the overall performance of the operating system and apps. These unnecessary files are safely cleaned from Mac when started in safe Mode.

If your Mac has directory issues—Many, but not all issues with your Mac’s startup disk can be resolved using the built-in Disk Utility application. If you’re plagued with an issue that cannot be reproduced in Safe Mode but appears to be resolved when you start up normally, chances are it was caused by a cache or a directory issue with your startup disk that Safe Mode fixed.

How to Start your Mac in Safe Mode?

  1. Follow these steps to start up into safe mode.
  2. Start or restart your Mac. 
  3. Immediately after you hear the startup sound, press and hold the Shift key.( Note:- If you are using a Wireless Keyboard,Make sure you press the Shift Key immediately after you hear the start up chimes sound.Bluetooth controllers will only activate after the startup chimes sound, so if the key is held before this, the key press will not be recognized. ).
  4. Release the Shift key when you see the Apple logo appear on the screen.
  5. Start your Mac in Safe Mode

  6. After the Apple logo appears, it might take longer than usual to reach the login screen or your desktop. This is because your Mac performs a directory check of your startup disk as part of safe mode.

  8. To leave safe mode, restart your computer without pressing any keys during startup.

If you're using FileVault

If your startup disk is encrypted with FileVault, you can still hold down the Shift key immediately after powering on your Mac to start up in safe mode. You might be prompted to log in twice as part of this process – first to unlock the startup disk, and a second time to log into the Finder. You can let go of the Shift key after you see the first login screen.


If an issue doesn't happen in safe mode

If an issue doesn't happen when your Mac is started in safe mode, try restarting again without pressing any keys at startup. If the issue appears to be resolved when you start up normally, it was possibly caused by a cache or a directory issue with your startup disk that safe mode fixed.
If you restart your Mac normally and an issue comes back when you reach your desktop, try disabling any login items that automatically open when you log in.

If your Mac restarts or shuts down in safe mode

If your Mac automatically restarts in safe mode, OS X might have found an issue that it's trying to fix. 
Safe mode performs a directory check of your startup disk, similar to what happens when you choose to verify or repair a disk using Disk Utility. If OS X finds an issue, the directory on your startup disk is repaired and your Mac restarts. 
If your Mac turns itself off when you start up in safe mode, check the power connection on your Mac to make sure it's plugged in securely at both your Mac and the power outlet. If you're using a MagSafe power adapter, make sure the LED on your power adapter is yellow or green. Then, try starting up in safe mode again.

If your Mac repeatedly restarts or shuts down during safe mode, contact Apple Support, or consult with an Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple Genius for more help.


Is your Mac taking longer than usual to boot in Safe Mode?


This is normal.Your Mac performs a directory check of your startup disk as part of Safe Mode so it will take a significantly longer time than usual to reach the login screen or the desktop


3 ways of identifying if you’re started in Safe Mode

If you’re unsure as to whether or not you’re in Safe Mode, take note of the following signs that give it away.

1. Menu bar reads “Safe Boot”

The first indication that you’re starting up in Safe Mode appears when you land on the login screen. If you’re in Safe Mode, the words “Safe Boot” in red letters will appear in the menu bar in the upper right corner of the screen.


2. Slower overall performance

Past the login screen, you’ll notice slower overall performance. Graphics will no longer be accelerated as default drivers are loaded. The OS X menus, windows and the Dock appear solid even if Translucent Menu Bar is selected in System Preferences.

Your screen might blink or tear during the login process. OS X menus, the Dock, your desktop and other aspects of the user interface won’t have as many visual effects and translucency will be disabled.

And as mentioned further below, several OS X features might be unavailable to you in Safe Mode, like watching movies in the DVD Player app, capturing video, connecting to Wi-Fi networks and more.

3. Boot Mode in System Information reads “Safe”

Another method of determining the status of your boot mode involves using the System Information application.

Step 1: Open System Information from Applications > Utilities. You can also choose About This Mac from the Apple menu and then click the System Report button in the Overview section.

Step 2: In the lefthand column, locate and click the Software section. You should see a couple related items listed on the right side of the System Information window.

If the Boot Mode is listed as “Safe” you’re started in Safe Mode. If it reads “Normal,” you’re in OS X’s normal-boot mode.



Some features aren't available in safe mode

Some features of your Mac aren't available when it's started in safe mode, so after you're done using safe mode you should restart your computer normally.

For example, these features don't work in safe mode:

  • You can't play movies in DVD Player.
  • You can't capture video in iMovie and some other video apps.
  • Some audio input or output devices might not work.
  • Some USB, FireWire and Thunderbolt devices might not be available.
  • Wi-Fi networking might be limited or unavailable depending on the Mac and OS X version you're using.
Safe mode in OS X v10.5 or later also disables accelerated graphics. This makes the OS X menu bar appear solid even if "Translucent Menu Bar" is selected in System Preferences. Your screen might also "blink" or "tear" during login when your Mac is started in safe mode.

Safe mode in OS X v10.6 or later also disables File Sharing.


Starting in safe mode without a keyboard

If your Mac doesn't have a keyboard available to start in safe mode but you have remote access to it, you can configure the Mac to startup in safe mode using the command line.
Access the command line by either opening Terminal remotely, or by logging into the computer using SSH.

Use the following Terminal command and restart your Mac:

sudo nvram boot-args="-x"

Unfortunately it is a bit difficult to see if this is the case when the system is only displaying a gray progress bar; however, you can force the system to show you what is going on by having it boot to both Safe and Verbose modes at the same time.If you want to start in verbose mode as well, use this instead:

sudo nvram boot-args="-x -v"

To restart your Mac normally from Safe Mode.After using safe mode, use this Terminal command to return to a normal startup:

sudo nvram boot-args=""

Unable to Logon to Windows as it asks for a Smart Card that I have never Used

Issue : When I booted my computer up and typed in my username and password it gave me an error. It said that I needed a smart card to login. I don't use smart cards.I retyped the password thinking I might have entered incorrect password but it gave me the same error.I tried to login with another user account but again the same error.So I think I accidentally enabled this policy in registry.

Solution: This happened because I accidentally configured my Windows system to allow only smart card logon.Smart Cards are a portable, secure and a tamper-proof  way to provide security solutions for tasks such as client authentication, logging on to domains, code signing, and securing e-mail. You can use smart cards to also log on to your Windows 7 / 8 computers.

You may find the same error or logon option sometimes with Remote Desktop Connection.Here are some picture I want to share with you that you may see when encounter any such problems.

If a problem prevents you from logging in to Windows with a smart card, start your computer in safe mode and disable this security feature.Smart Card Login option will not be available in Safe Mode. Whether you log in with a physical or virtual smart card, Windows stores your settings in the Windows NT Registry. If you're able to log in to Windows, you can disable smart card login for future sessions by editing your local group policies. Disabling the Smart Card Plug and Play service removes the option to insert a smart card when logging in.

1. First of all log in to Windows in Safe mode, this can be achieved by pressing F8 key while the computer is booting.

2. From the options available, pick Safe mode with networking and hit Enter. Then log on to the computer by using administrative credentials.

3. Press Windows Key + R combination, type Regedt32.exe in the Run dialog box and hit Enter to open the Registry Editor.

4. Navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

5. In the right pane of this location, you’ll find a DWORD named scforceoption. Since your computer allows Smart Card logon only, the DWORD shows the Value data equals to 1.

6. In the Value Data field, change the current value of “1” to “0” and click “OK.”

7. Close Registry Editor and restart your computer in normal mode. The login screen prompts you to enter your username and password rather than insert a smart card.


Note: - Do note that this settings will be reset back to the default setting which is Value ‘1’, after 90 minutes, when the next Group Policy refresh takes place.

1. Press Windows Key + R combination, type gpedit.msc in the Run dialog box and hit Enter to open the Local Group Policy Editor.

2. Navigate to "Computer Configuration>Policies>Windows Settings>Local Policies>Security Options>Interactive logon: Require smart cards"

3. Right-click “Interactive logon: Require smart cards” and select “Edit.” In the Properties dialog, select “Disabled” to turn off this service

4. Now navigate to "Computer Configuration>Administrative Templates>Windows Components>Smart Card>Turn On Smart Card Plug and Play Service"

5. Right-click “Turn On Smart Card Plug and Play Service” and select “Edit.” In the Properties dialog, select “Disabled” to turn off this service and remove the smart card option from the login screen. Click “Apply” and “OK” to save your changes.
