Fix Error-Time Machine Backup Disk does not have Ownership Enabled

Issue: When you try to turn the Time Machine Backup on, onto an external hard drive or you want to take the backup you get the following error message

"The backup disk does not have ownership enabled.  You must have ownership enabled to use this disk for Time Machine backups.  Open Time Machine preferences to select a different backup disk."

OR

When you try to copy the backup file Backups.backupdb onto the newly erased external hard drive you get the following error message

"The backup can't be copied because the backup volume doesn't have ownership enabled."

This article applies to, and works the same on, all versions of the Mac OS from 10.6 through 10.11.

Solution:To solve this problem you really need to understand what this Ownership on a hard drive is?.

If you use an external drive to share music, photos or other files, then you should know about the "Ignore ownership on this volume" option. This allows you to have multiple users on the same Mac, or multiple users across several Macs to have the same access to files and folders regardless of which user put them there.Every users are treated as the owner of the file on that external hard drive. It is simply like sharing the data on an external drive. This means that file owners and groups will be ignored on this volume. This is very convenient for external drives being shared between machines with different user accounts on them.

But for a Boot / Backup volume it is not a good idea as you would like to retain the owner/group information because applications, and the boot disk, require permissions and ownership to be accurate and enabled to function properly(A permission allows one application to “talk” with another application.) This is what we repair using Disk Utility to “Repair Disk Permissions.”

So if you are trying to take the backup or copying the Time Machine backup file to an external hard drive you have to make sure the "Ignore ownership on this volume" is unchecked i.e. ownership is enabled.

If ownership is not enabled you could use either of the following methods to enable ownership.

Method 1. Enable Ownership from Finder

1. Select the drive you want to turn the Ownership on.
2. Press Command+I (or choose File > Get Info).
Enable Ownership on Time Machine Backup Disk

3. Twirl open the Sharing and Permissions triangle and look toward the bottom.
4. If necessary, click the lock icon , then enter an administrator name and password.

4. Check the box saying “Ignore ownership on this volume”

Method 2. Enable Ownership from Finder

1. Open Terminal.
2. Type the command diskutil list to know the disk identifier.

$ diskutil list

   #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
   0:                            Disk Image             *41.0 MB    disk2

3. Then type the command "sudo diskutil enableOwnership diskidentifier" and then type the administrator password when prompted.

How to Create an Apple ID without Credit Card?

Millions of people have this question as how to create an Apple ID without entering their Credit Card's detail in Apple's System?.It's because they are scared of being hacked by some unethical person as several instances have occurred in the past few years where big companies like apple were reported to be hacked with passwords and credit card number shown in the systems.

A few years ago, linking a credit card to an Apple account was mandatory. But Apple has changed its stance and has been letting users create an Apple ID without a credit card for a while now.Having an Apple ID is a prerequisite to do just about anything related to Apple services. If you want to buy music on iTunes, download apps in the App Store,Reinstall OS X or use iCloud, you must have an Apple ID

Whatever your reason might be to do so, I am going to show you how to create an Apple ID without a credit card.

Note that if you don’t link a credit card or other payment method to your Apple ID, you will obviously not be able to complete purchases, but you will however be able to download free content, such as free apps, free music or free books.

The main reason of writing this post is, while creating Apple ID it asks to set up a payment method where you have the option to provide Credit/Debit card details or use Paypal, Redeem a gift certificate or select None as a payment method for the free Apple ID,sometimes this option of selecting None is not available or not shown or the option none is there, but after you select next, it loops you to the top of the screen and nothing happens. It also says "For assistance, contact iTunes Support" or "Please contact iTunes support to complete this transaction"

Solutions: This issue of not showing None option as a payment method or looping you to the same payment method screen is always resulted when you are using an existing or old Apple ID that you have already created before either on a windows PC or otherwise and did not set up payment method. As per the Apple there could be following major reasons of not showing None when editing your Apple ID payment information.

Why can’t I select None when I edit my Apple ID payment information?

You might not be able to see or select the None payment option for one of these reasons. If you don't want to use a credit card, you can use another form of payment, such as a gift card.

1. If you have an unpaid balance or payment due

You can't select None as your payment type until you pay your balance. To see which order you need to pay for, view your purchase history on a Mac or PC. When you sign in to the store, you might see a message that there was a billing issue with your last order. Click the Billing Info button to see the order.
After you pay for the order, you can change your payment information to None.

2. If you're using the iTunes Store or App Store for the first time

If you're using the store for the first time with an existing Apple ID, you must provide a payment method. After you create the account, you can change your payment information to None.
If you're creating a new Apple ID, you might be able to create an account without entering your credit card details.

3. If you changed your country or region

When you change the country or region of an existing Apple ID, you must provide a payment method and update your billing options. If you want to remove your payment method after you change the country or region, you can change your payment information to None.

4. If you're a part of Family Sharing

When you set up Family Sharing, the family organizer must provide a payment method. If your family includes a child account, the family organizer must use a credit card as the payment method. This payment method will be used for all purchases initiated by family members and can only be changed by the family organizer.

Create an Apple ID for iTunes Store, App Store, or iBooks Store account without a credit card or other payment method

If you already have an Apple ID

If you've already created your Apple ID, you'll need to add a payment method when you first use it to sign in to the iTunes Store, App Store, or iBooks Store. But you can optionally remove the payment method after you sign in to the store. You won't be asked for a payment method again until you make your first purchase.

If you don't have an Apple ID

If you haven't created your Apple ID, follow the steps below to create one and a store account at the same time, without adding a payment method.

On an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

  1. Open the App Store, iTunes Store, or iBooks Store.

  6. Even though you are creating the account without choosing a credit card, Apple still requires you to enter your name, address and phone number. You can always enter the address and phone number of your school. Scroll down and enter your name, address and phone number, then tap "Next".

  7. After you enter all of the information required, you'll be asked to verify your Apple ID by email. Apple will send you a confirmation email to the email address you provided. Check your emails and click the “Verify” link in the email Apple sent you, then log in using your newly created username (your email address) and password.
  8. Finally, go back to the App Store application, and sign in your new account.
You should now be able to download free content from Apple. If you ever try to download paid content though, Apple will ask you to update your payment information and provide a credit card.

If you use Family Sharing, and you’re the family organizer, you can’t set your payment information to None. You'll need to use a credit card or debit card.

On a Mac or PC

1. Open iTunes, then go to the iTunes Store by clicking the iTunes Store button at the top of the window.

In worst scenario where the None option is still not available try following options.

1. Leave the payment method to default VISA and enter a gift card code and your address then click next it will fail but the NONE option will appear the next time , Select none and click next and you are DONE. It worked for some people as claimed on apple support forum.

"it says you can use a itunes voucher in the end I bought a £15.00 itunes voucher and inputted the code and it let me complete my account set up and start to download apps and music.  When I then went back into my account details (after completeing the set up) the "none" option had appeared, thats something apple needs to look at, why isnt the "none" option available from the start?"

2.  Provide your Credit/Debit Card details, download a free app and then login to https://appleid.apple.com/us/ go to modify the payment information. At this point the none option will be available and you would be able to select this and clear the visa card information.

3. Clear your browser's Caches and Cookies delete history and then try to create a new Apple ID with the Email ID you never ever have tried registering/using your preferred apple id/e-mail address.

Unable to open iTunes-The iTunes Library file is locked on a locked disk

Issue : Unable to open iTunes. When you open iTunes it gives you error message "The iTunes Library file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file." and finally you will have to quit the iTunes. So basically you could not open iTunes.

When researched on this issue I found that one of the reasons for this problem is moving the whole iTunes folder from other Mac or external hard drive or using "Migration Assistant" to move your profile over.

I ran repair disk permissions and that still did not fix and obviously it will not because the iTunes Library and its supporting files are in my user profile folder.Apparently, when you use the Disk Utility in Repair Permissions – a standard troubleshooting maneuver in OS X – it doesn’t actually repair the permission settings on folders and files in your Home folder.

Which is where the recovery mode comes as handy.Home folder permissions and ACLs ( Access Control Lists ) are reset from recovery mode.In this post we will be learning to troubleshoot very common error "The iTunes Library file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file."

Solution to Unable to open iTunes-The iTunes Library file is locked, on a locked disk

There are multiple ways out there published on internet to fix it.But I found one very simple and always working solution which you could try first. Before following this first steps it is advisable to make sure you know where your songs are and what all location they are added from because we are going to delete the iTunes Library.itl file, which contains the exact same information like a playlist file.

Step -1- Fix Unable to open iTunes-The iTunes Library file is locked, on a locked disk

1. Click on the Go menu and select Go to Folder...
2. Type ~/Music/iTunes .

3. Delete the iTunes Library.itl file.
4. Launch the iTunes application by clicking its icon in the dock and this will automatically create an iTunes Library.itl files.

5. So you need to go ahead and Scan iTunes for media to add Songs in your newly created library.

Step-2

If step -1 does not work try this second step. You can actually just fix those permissions by

  1. Going  into: Macintosh HD > Users
  2. Right-click on your user name (home folder) and select Get Info.

Unable to open iTunes-The iTunes Library file is locked, on a locked disk
Unable to open iTunes-The iTunes Library file is locked, on a locked disk
  3. Click the lock at the bottom and enter your password.
  4. Your permissions at the moment for that folder should be Read & Write for you,Read only for staff and everyone.

  5. Click the gear icon at the bottom, and select Apply to enclosed items.
Unable to open iTunes-The iTunes Library file is locked, on a locked disk
Unable to open iTunes-The iTunes Library file is locked, on a locked disk
  6. The last step will take a few minutes to complete, but once done, everything in your home folder should now have their proper permissions.

Step 3

Here's another solution, since I just ran into this as well.  The issue was created when I copied over my iTunes library, the "iTunes Library.xml" and "iTunes Library.itl" files were both still owned by my previous user id, not my current id.And that's why I was Unable to open iTunes and got the error "The iTunes Library file is locked, on a locked disk".But it uses sudo and chown from the command line, so if you're not comfortable doing this, please don't (you can do a lot of damage if you make a mistake).

1. Open Terminal from utilities folder.
2. Using the Terminal application, go do your Music folder:
3. Type cd ~/Music and hit Enter/Return.
4. Then forcibly reset the user info for your entire library by typing the command.

sudo chown -R [login]:staff iTunes

where [login] is your username (not the full displayname, just the shortname).
So for example, let's say my username is nsohail then this command would be.

sudo chown -R nsohail:staff iTunes

Step 4

This is another simple method of fixing issue: Unable to open iTunes as it gives error message "The iTunes Library file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file."

1. Click on the Go menu and select Go to Folder...
2. Type ~/Music/iTunes .
3. Move your iTunes library Data file to your desktop.
4. Start iTunes - your play list will be empty.
5. Quit iTunes and copy the data file from Desktop back in to the iTunes folder.
6. Start iTunes and it should work just fine with all your old history preserved.
