What is macOS 10.13 High Sierra named after? - The real reason behind the name and update

Apple finally announced the name of it's new macOS to be High Sierra in WWDC 2017- Annual Developer Conference on June 5, 2017. There were so much rumors about its name before its was expected to be unveiled at WWDC event 2017. People were guessing so many new name like Sequoia, Redwood, Mammoth, Death Valley, Kings Canyon, Whitney but Apple finally thought of a new name macOS High Sierra after a famous region or county in eastern California. Apple has been known to give each new OS release a new name almost every year.

As the Apple's senior vice president of Software Engineering - Craig Federighi announced at WWDC 2013 on June 10, 2013, that the company would be switching its OS X naming convention from big cats to famous places that inspire us in California because the company was in danger of running out of cat names, Federighi jokingly said. As a result of which Apple named its OS X " Mavericks" after a popular surfing spot in northern California known for its massive waves. OS X Mavericks was the first to adopt the new naming convention which Apple has been following currently. OS X 10.9 Mavericks was followed by OS X 10.10 Yosemite and then OS X 10.11 El Capitan. El Capitan brought so many new features and big refinements to its predecessor. El Capitan was later succeeded by the macOS Sierra.

With the release of macOS 10.12 Sierra, Apple actually changed the brand of its Mac OS X. The main purpose of this rebranding was to bring the Mac operating system's name similar to that of other Apple products, like iOS for iPhone, tvOS for Apple TV and watchOS for the Apple Watch.

macOS Sierra was named after beautiful Sierra County in Sierra Nevada mountain range. macOS Sierra has been succeeded by the new macOS High Sierra. macOS High Sierra (version 10.13) is the fourteenth major release of Apple's Mac OS. As its name suggests, it won't offer any drastic changes, but rather enhanced, refined and tweaked version of current macOS Sierra. Just like Apple used to do with the cat naming convention - for example, OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion was just a refinement and enhancement to the previous version, OS X 10.7 Lion. Safari has been refined and new features have been added to Safari in macOS High Sierra.

This clearly means that it is the same macOS Sierra with refinement and enhancement to its features. With the introduction of Apple File System and Virtual reality supports it opens up a new possibilities for future innovation.
