NewsExclusive Preview: Hands-On with Call of Duty: Black Ops 7

Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 – A New Era in the Franchise

The Call of Duty series has been a cornerstone in the gaming world, captivating millions with its thrilling gameplay and immersive storylines. This year, for the first time, fans are treated to consecutive Black Ops games, with the launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. Set in the futuristic year of 2035, this installment continues the narrative from Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, while building on the innovations introduced in Black Ops 6. The game features advanced systems like Omnimovement and the much-anticipated return of round-based Zombies, promising an exhilarating experience for both seasoned veterans and newcomers alike.

Gameplay Enhancements

Omnimovement: A Leap Forward

Building upon the groundwork laid by its predecessor, Black Ops 7 introduces enhancements to the Omnimovement system—a feature that allows players to run, slide, and dive in any direction. A standout addition is wall-jumping, which enables players to vault into the air, navigate around obstacles, and surprise opponents. Players can string together up to three consecutive jumps, though momentum decreases with each successive leap. Other notable improvements include the ability to move while mounted and a new finishing move where players can attach a grenade to enemies, sending them towards their teammates with explosive results.

Movement Customization

While the agility offered by Omnimovement is still available to all players, Treyarch has introduced a layer of customization by incorporating some elements as Perks. For instance, the double-time Tactical Sprint now requires a specific Perk, with the trade-off being a slower standard sprint. Other Perks, such as Lightweight and Dexterity, enhance movement speed and allow for quicker reloading and aiming during dynamic actions.

Overclocking: Powering Up Your Arsenal

In Black Ops 7, players can now Overclock their equipment, Scorestreaks, and Field Upgrades by effectively utilizing them in battle. This mechanic unlocks upgrades that make these items more potent. Players can select their preferred Overclocks as part of their loadout, tailoring their gameplay style to suit their strategic preferences.

Hybrid Combat Specialist

The game introduces a more flexible system for gaining Combat Specialist bonuses. Unlike the previous installment, where selecting three Perks of the same type was necessary, Black Ops 7 allows players to combine two Perks of one type with one of another. This new Hybrid Combat Specialist bonus offers a wider array of tactical options, encouraging players to experiment with different combinations.

Near-Future Warfare

Set in the 2030s, Black Ops 7 brings futuristic warfare to the forefront with robotic and drone threats that players can deploy as Scorestreaks. Key additions include the D.A.W.G., a canine-like combat robot, and the Rhino, a minigun-wielding robot reminiscent of the Juggernaut. Additionally, Hunter-Killer Drones and the upgraded VOTL Warship make a return, adding a layer of technological warfare to the battlefield.

Sharing Loadouts

In a bid to foster community engagement, the game allows players to view and replicate the loadouts of opponents via the Kill Cam. Players can use Gunsmith codes to share their weapon builds with friends or the wider gaming community, facilitating a collaborative spirit within the game.

A Diverse Arsenal

With its near-future setting, Black Ops 7 introduces 30 new weapons, including 16 entirely new to the franchise. This expanded arsenal ensures players have a variety of tools at their disposal to tackle different combat scenarios.

Multiplayer Experience

Black Ops 7 launches with 18 multiplayer maps, comprising 15 new maps and three remastered classics, alongside two large-scale 20-vs.-20 arenas. The game’s multiplayer beta featured six of these new maps, offering a taste of the action to come.

Exploring New Maps

  • Blackheart: Resembling a small oil rig, Blackheart is circular and centered around a room where teams engage in intense battles. The perimeter offers longer sight lines for sniping and strategic ambushes.
  • Toshin: Set in a Japanese cityscape, Toshin features numerous interiors, tight corners, and cover opportunities, such as crashed vehicles. Navigating the map requires finding hidden pathways like vents or elevator shafts.
  • The Forge: This map doubles as a corporate testing ground and showroom, highlighting the paramilitary organization The Guild’s advanced technology.
  • Exposure: Situated near solar panels, this industrial site offers opportunities for ambushes and strategic maneuvering across its prefabricated structures.
  • Cortex: With a supervillain lab aesthetic, Cortex features looping exteriors and interior pathways, offering multiple routes to objectives.
  • Imprint: Set in a snowy mountain fortress, Imprint combines open spaces with limited cover and enclosed corridors, demanding situational awareness.

    Game Modes

In addition to classic modes like Team Deathmatch and Domination, Black Ops 7 introduces new modes like Overload. This 6-vs.-6 mode involves teams vying for control of an overload device, leading to intense battles and strategic plays. The game also includes Skirmish, a 20-vs.-20 mode with dedicated maps for large-scale warfare.

    Zombies: A Fan-Favorite Returns

The beloved Zombies mode returns with new maps and challenges. The launch map, Ashes of the Damned, is the largest in Call of Duty history, featuring interconnected locations shrouded in dangerous fog. Players must navigate this treacherous environment using the "Wonder Vehicle," Ol’ Tessie, which can be upgraded to withstand the undead onslaught.

New modes like Survival and Cursed add variety to the Zombies experience. Survival mode offers a faster-paced game on smaller maps, while Cursed mode presents a heightened challenge for experienced players.

    Warzone Updates

Black Ops 7 introduces Haven’s Hollow, a new Resurgence map set in Appalachia, featuring diverse environments and strategic points of interest. An updated version of Verdansk also makes its debut, with new locations like the Signal Station and a revamped Factory.

    Participating in the Beta

Players eager to experience Black Ops 7 can participate in the open beta from October 5 to 8, with early access available to those who pre-order. The beta includes a selection of multiplayer maps, modes, and the new Vandorn Farm map for Zombies.

Black Ops 7 builds on its predecessor’s foundation with targeted improvements and a wealth of new content across all modes. The full game is set to launch on November 14, offering an exciting new chapter in the Call of Duty saga. For more information, you can visit the official PlayStation website.
