      As with cloud and BYOD, the sequence is predictable: employee adoption precedes the implementation of controls, and retroactive measures tend to be more costly, cumbersome, and less effective than proactive governance.

      Steps Towards Mitigating AI Risks

      It’s important to understand that AI-driven insider risk does not stem from malicious intent but from employees striving to be productive and efficient. This ordinary behavior, unfortunately, may lead to unnecessary exposure. Therefore, organizations can take immediate action by focusing on employee education.

      Effective education should be practical and relatable, aimed at fostering a behavioral shift rather than simply checking a compliance box. Here are three actionable steps that can make a substantial difference:

    • Build Awareness with Real Examples: Illustrate how actions like pasting code or customer details into a chatbot can have the same impact as publicly posting them. This realization serves as the "aha" moment that many employees need.

By enabling employees to harness AI’s productivity while protecting critical data, organizations can mitigate today’s risks and prepare for the inevitable regulations and oversight that will follow.
