NewsArtemis Unveiled: Erik Richards Revealed as NASA's Newest Member

Erik Richards, the Near Space Network Mission Manager at NASA, has dedicated his career to ensuring spacecraft can communicate with Earth. From dreaming of spaceflight as a child during the Space Shuttle Program era to working at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, Richards has come a long way. Most recently, he has been playing a key role in NASA’s Artemis mission to the Moon.

As the mission manager for NASA’s Near Space Network, Richards is responsible for ensuring communication between the Artemis II crew and the Orion spacecraft with Earth throughout the mission. The Near Space Network is a network of relay satellites and ground stations that span from Bermuda to South Africa, working alongside NASA’s Deep Space Network to keep the spacecraft and astronauts connected to mission control during their roughly 10-day mission.

Richards likens the Near Space Network to a telephone network on Earth – essential yet invisible when everything is working smoothly. Without communication, there would be no contact with home. Working in conjunction with the Deep Space Network, the Near Space Network provides navigation, real-time voice communications, data transfer, and situational awareness for Artemis II.

Richards’ role in coordinating communications across the Artemis mission’s flight segments, ground stations, and support teams has been crucial in humanity’s return to the Moon. Leading up to the launch, Richards has been involved in extensive testing and readiness operations to prepare the network. During the mission, he will be actively monitoring data flow and coordinating support worldwide.

The support provided by Richards and his team for Artemis II will pave the way for future missions like Artemis III and NASA’s goal of establishing a sustained human presence on the lunar surface. For Richards, being part of this progression from shuttle missions to the Moon and eventually Mars is a connection to his childhood passion for spaceflight.

Richards emphasizes that one does not have to be an astronaut to contribute to the future of human exploration. Being part of the Artemis campaign is an opportunity to be part of something greater and play a crucial role in advancing space exploration.
