Amazon S3, the cloud storage service that revolutionized cloud infrastructure, celebrated its 20th anniversary last week. Since its public launch in 2006, Amazon S3 has grown exponentially, currently storing over 500 trillion objects and serving more than 200 million requests per second globally. The price has also significantly dropped to just over 2 cents per gigabyte, marking an 85% reduction since its inception.
In addition to the milestone anniversary, a new feature was introduced for Amazon S3 general purpose buckets. The new feature, called Account Regional Namespaces, allows users to create buckets within their own account regional namespace by appending a unique suffix to the bucket name. This ensures that the desired bucket names are reserved exclusively for the user’s account. Users can enforce this feature across their organization using AWS IAM policies and AWS Organizations service control policies.
Another exciting launch this week is the general availability of Amazon Route 53 Global Resolver. This internet-reachable anycast DNS resolver provides DNS resolution for authorized clients from any location. With support for both IPv4 and IPv6 DNS query traffic, Route 53 Global Resolver offers anycast DNS resolution for public internet domains and private domains associated with Route 53 private hosted zones. It also includes DNS query filtering to block potentially malicious domains and centralized query logging.
Other notable announcements from last week include support for stateful MCP server features in Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Runtime, the introduction of Amazon WorkSpaces bundles powered by Microsoft Windows Server 2025, support for Sign in with GitHub and Amazon in AWS Builder ID, and the introduction of reusable templates for COPY operations in Amazon Redshift.
