The VHA serves millions of Veterans across the country, requiring a comprehensive system to connect all stakeholders involved in delivering care, including medical teams, caregivers, service providers, and VA employees. To streamline operations, share best practices, and optimize resources, the VHA sought a unified operating system that could adapt to changing care dynamics and improve efficiency without compromising the quality of care.

By leveraging Salesforce’s AI-powered capabilities and integrating them into a single operating system within Slack, the VHA is transitioning from manual reporting to automated problem-solving. This shift aims to eliminate administrative silos, enhance frontline care for Veterans, reduce costs, and optimize operational processes across all facilities nationwide. Josh Geiger, Senior Advisor to the VHA Chief Operating Officer, highlighted the benefits of utilizing Slack as a performance-management layer to drive real work, cut costs, and enhance efficiency within the organization.

The agentic operating system deployed by the VHA is revolutionizing how its employees manage operations and services within the healthcare system. By incorporating AI, human expertise, and enterprise data in Slack, the VHA is transitioning from fragmented workflows to intelligent collaboration on a large scale. Greg Goins, Acting Chief Operating Officer of the US Department of Veterans Affairs, emphasized the strategic advantages of this shift, allowing VHA leadership to focus on critical decisions while AI streamlines routine coordination and enhances care delivery for Veterans. Dave Rey, President of Global Public Sector at Salesforce, commended the VHA for setting a new standard in utilizing AI to proactively improve care delivery. By building an agentic operating system on Salesforce and Slack, the VHA is empowering its workforce with actionable insights to ensure every Veteran receives top-quality care supported by the collective expertise of the entire VA system.

Looking ahead, the VHA is exploring pilot programs to integrate its Slack infrastructure with VA Health Connect, the agency’s virtual contact center, to enhance telehealth collaborations and streamline patient intake and triage processes.
