Monster Hunter Wilds: A Sneak Peek at the Upcoming PS5 Game
The highly anticipated next entry in the Monster Hunter series, "Monster Hunter Wilds," is set to release on February 28 for the PlayStation 5. I had the privilege of experiencing the Story Quest firsthand at the Tokyo Game Show 2024. From the introduction of the new storyline to the intense battle against a formidable amphibian monster known as the Chatacabra, the gameplay was nothing short of breathtaking.
Monster Chase in Windward Plains
The Story Quest kicked off with an enjoyable process of creating my character. I had the freedom to customize every detail of my hunter’s appearance and even that of my trusted partner, the Palico. Customization in games like this allows players to feel more connected to their characters, enhancing the overall gaming experience.
As the story began, I found myself traversing the Windward Plains aboard a sand ship with the Forbidden Lands Research Commission. Through flashbacks, the game explained how my character became part of this commission. Suddenly, the narrative shifted to a thrilling chase scene where a herd of desert-dwelling Balaharas pursued a girl riding a creature called a Seikret. Without hesitation, I jumped onto a Seikret and joined the chase to rescue the girl.
Balahara Chase
During this chase scene, my Seikret was on autopilot, focusing on catching up to the girl. However, I had some control over the camera view and my ridable partner, allowing me to immerse myself in the action. I navigated the Seikret over boulders and through the air to close the distance.
Upon catching up to the girl, the tables turned, and I found myself being pursued by relentless Balaharas. It was a heart-pounding chase as they closed in from all directions. I attacked them using my slinger to fire sonic bombs, creating a thrilling and immersive experience.
Seikret Joy Ride
After discovering that the young girl was separated from her brother, my hunter decided to find him. To gain more insight before embarking on the mission, I sought the advice of the Handler, Alma. She provided valuable recommendations on which of the 14 available weapons would be most suitable for the journey.
Fortunately, the girl’s Seikret remembered her brother’s scent, guiding us to his location. Although the Seikret guided me automatically, I had full control over its movements. I could accelerate and decelerate, and even make it dash forward or come to a quick stop. Using the left stick, I guided my mount in the desired direction, occasionally making detours to explore interesting spots. This hands-free ride allowed me to gather hunting items, materials, and wield my weapon efficiently.
New Wound System and SOS Flare in the Chatacabra Hunt
Upon arriving at the locale, a simple mission to find the brother quickly escalated into a hunt for a Chatacabra, a formidable foe. Leveraging the new wound system, I focused my attacks on the same weak point to inflict significant damage. This system is a new feature in Monster Hunter Wilds, making battles more strategic.
The game also introduced Focus mode, activated by holding down the L2 button. This mode displays a reticle on the screen, guiding players on where to attack and highlighting the monster’s wounds for easier aiming. This feature allows for more precise targeting, even with slower weapons like the Great Sword.
By pressing R1 in Focus mode, I uncovered the strategic Focus Strike. This special attack connects with a wound or weak point, dealing massive damage and stunning the foe. One of the most satisfying moments in the game was when I managed to destroy multiple wounds with a single Focus Attack.
During the hunt, I could summon my Seikret swiftly by pressing the directional key. Once mounted, I strategically drank a healing potion to restore my health and used a whetstone to sharpen my weapon.
Another unique feature is the SOS Flare, a tool that calls for aid from NPC support hunters. When other hunters join the battle, the monster’s rage is likely redirected, helping novice players avoid damage. Although this feature wasn’t available in the offline single-player demo, it will allow players to recruit others while summoning support hunters online.
New Stories Unfold in the Forbidden Lands
After defeating the Chatacabra, I hurried back to the camp with the rescued brother. The main mission in the first chapter concluded with the newly reunited siblings sharing tales to catch up.
The Story Quest was rich in content, from the gripping Balahara chase scene to leveraging the wound system and Focus mode in the challenging hunt for the elusive Chatacabra. As players embark on the main mission, I’m convinced that both new hunters and those discovering the series for the first time will be mesmerized by the world that unfolds when Monster Hunter Wilds launches on February 28 on PS5.
