Nathan Jermyn’s Journey: From Military Service to NASA Legal Advisor
Nathan Jermyn, a seasoned legal professional, embarked on a unique journey before delving into the intricate legal frameworks at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Jermyn initiated his career at NASA with a one-day orientation during the summer of 2023. This orientation was the first step in his new role as an attorney-advisor, where he would provide crucial support to NASA’s Stennis Space Center and the NASA Shared Services Center, both located near Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. However, his immediate responsibilities took a different turn when he was called upon by the Mississippi Army National Guard. Just a week after his orientation, Jermyn was deployed to offer military legal counsel for approximately six months as part of Operation Spartan Shield and Operation Inherent Resolve.
Upon completing his military duties, the highly decorated veteran returned to NASA in January 2024. He fully embraced his role within the contract and procurement practice group at the NASA Office of the General Counsel. Reflecting on his experience, Jermyn shared, "Even though I have been working here for two years, sometimes it does not feel real."
In his capacity as a member of the contract and procurement law team, Jermyn plays a vital role in advising on various contract and procurement issues. His work ensures that taxpayer funds are utilized responsibly across NASA Stennis and the NASA Shared Services Center. Additionally, Jermyn is part of NASA’s Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) team, offering legal reviews and advice on FOIA requests. "It is also amazing the lengths everyone will go to help each other accomplish the mission."
Before his tenure at NASA, Jermyn pursued a solid educational foundation. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from The University of Southern Mississippi, followed by a law degree from Mississippi College School of Law. Initially, Jermyn practiced criminal law in Gulfport, Mississippi. However, he credits the supportive team at NASA for aiding his transition into the complexities of government contract law. "Having a team that supports you and teaches you every day really expedites the learning process," Jermyn emphasized. "Our team puts a heavy emphasis on learning, development, and teamwork."
Jermyn is particularly enthusiastic about NASA’s future endeavors, particularly the Artemis campaign. This ambitious initiative aims to explore the Moon for scientific discovery, economic benefits, and to lay the groundwork for the first crewed missions to Mars. The next step in this campaign, Artemis II, is scheduled for 2026. "I wholeheartedly believe humanity is destined for the stars, and NASA is in prime position to lead that charge," Jermyn expressed.
