Docker Captains are individuals who are experts in the developer community and are passionate about sharing their knowledge of Docker with others. In our blog series called “From the Captain’s Chair,” we take a closer look at one of these Captains to learn more about them and their experiences.
Today, we have the pleasure of interviewing Naga Santhosh Reddy Vootukuri, also known as Sunny. Sunny is a Principal Software Engineering Manager at Microsoft Azure SQL organization with over 17 years of experience in building cloud distributed scalable systems. He is not only a Dapr Meteor but also an open-source contributor to Dapr and Microcks, which are both highly recognized CNCF projects.
Sunny is also an IEEE Senior member and actively participates in various IEEE conferences in Seattle. He presents workshops and is a regular conference speaker, sharing his expertise on topics like Cloud computing, Microservices, Docker, and AI. Additionally, he is a core member of the MVB at DZone and regularly blogs about various topics such as Docker, Github Actions, Cloud Native Microservices, and Dapr. Sunny has also authored three books on subjects like Azure Container Apps, Aspire, and Github Copilot.
Sunny’s Docker journey began in 2016, during his time in Shanghai, China. He was inspired to learn more about Docker after attending a local meet-up where an engineer presented a talk on the platform. Since then, Docker has become an integral part of his work and life.
When asked about his inspiration to become a Docker Captain, Sunny shared that his love for sharing knowledge and building a strong community led him to pursue this role. After meeting some Docker Captains at a conference, he learned about the program and the benefits it offered. Sunny applied to become a Docker Captain and has been enjoying the experience ever since.
One of Sunny’s personal goals for 2026 is to write a couple more technical books, with titles like “Docker Loves AI” and “Building Enterprise Copilots Using Copilot Studio.” He is also working on submitting proposals to speak at major conferences and hopes to end the year on a high note. Additionally, he plans to embark on a cross-country road trip to explore the best beaches on the west coast.
If Sunny wasn’t working in tech, he believes he would have pursued a career in cricket. His love for the sport started at a young age and continues to this day. He still plays in domestic leagues in Seattle and cherishes the memories of playing cricket in Shanghai with people from different countries.
One memorable story Sunny shared from collaborating with the Docker community was when he received warm support from fellow Captains in the Slack group while facing technical challenges. He also fondly recalled spending time with other Captains in Turkey, discussing various topics related to Docker and startups.
Sunny’s favorite Docker product right now is the Docker Agent framework. He was impressed by its potential to integrate with GitHub Models and avoid vendor lock-in when building AI agents. He even had a productive chat with the Docker team lead, resulting in a new release with GitHub Models integration.
In a recent technical challenge, Sunny worked on implementing local language translation support for Microsoft open-source repositories. He successfully added support for South Indian languages like Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam to these repositories.
One Docker tip that Sunny wishes every developer knew is to use the VS Code extension Docker DX for live-debugging Dockerfiles. He finds this tool essential for identifying and resolving issues quickly.
If Sunny could containerize any non-technical object in real life, he would choose work sessions. He envisions a containerized work environment that isolates individuals from distractions, providing a focused space for productivity.
You can find Sunny online on LinkedIn and his blog, where he regularly shares his knowledge and insights.
In a rapid-fire round of questions, Sunny revealed that he prefers dogs over cats, is a morning person who wakes up at 4 am, loves Hyderabadi Spicy Dum Biryani, is described by friends as energetic, recently picked up learning Spanish on Duolingo, and enjoys playing cricket in his free time.
Overall, Sunny’s journey as a Docker Captain and his contributions to the community highlight his passion for technology, knowledge sharing, and building a stronger developer community.
