NewsAWS Update: Mexico Region Launch, Multi-Account Sign-In, and More

As the winter months continue to envelop the Netherlands in a chilly embrace, the occasional appearance of sunshine becomes a cherished delight. This past weekend, a rare burst of golden sunlight illuminated the typically gray Dutch skies, offering a serene moment of tranquility as I cycled along a peaceful canal. Such glimpses of brightness feel particularly precious during January, when daylight is scarce in this part of Europe. As we progress into 2025, the third week of the new year brings both introspection and a drive towards future advancements. While global discussions buzz around technological innovations, it’s these small, personal moments that remind us to pause and savor the simple joys amidst our rapidly evolving world.

With that reflective note, let’s delve into the recent announcements that have captured my attention over the past week.

Recent Launches

AWS Mexico (Central) Region

In February 2024, AWS announced its plans to expand its infrastructure in Mexico. This vision has now materialized with the launch of the AWS Mexico (Central) Region, which includes three Availability Zones with the API code mx-central-1. This marks AWS’s first infrastructure Region in Mexico, adding to its expanding presence in Latin America. This new Region offers users local workload management, data storage capabilities, improved performance with reduced latency, and robust security measures. It features advanced cloud technologies, including state-of-the-art artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) capabilities powered by specialized processors. Security is a top priority, with support for 143 security standards and compliance certifications. With this launch, AWS now operates 114 Availability Zones across 36 geographic Regions.

AWS Management Console: Multi-Account Sign-In

The AWS Management Console has introduced a multi-session capability, allowing users to sign in to multiple AWS accounts simultaneously within a single browser. This feature supports up to five sessions, which can be a mix of root, AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM), or federated roles across different accounts or within the same account. This capability allows for easier application scaling across multiple accounts, following AWS’s best-practice guidelines. It enables users to manage different environments, such as development, testing, and production, and compare resource configurations and statuses across accounts to troubleshoot application issues effectively.

Amazon EC2 Flex Instances: Larger Sizes

AWS has announced the general availability of two new larger sizes (12xlarge and 16xlarge) for Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) Flex instances, specifically the C7i-flex and M7i-flex models. These new sizes expand the EC2 Flex portfolio, offering more compute options for scaling up existing workloads or running larger applications that require additional memory. Powered by custom 4th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors, available exclusively on AWS, these instances deliver up to 15% better performance compared to other x86-based Intel processors used by other cloud providers. Flex instances provide significant price-performance benefits and cost savings for compute-intensive and general-purpose workloads.

AWS User Notifications on AWS CloudFormation

AWS User Notifications are now generally available on AWS CloudFormation. This feature allows users to configure notifications through the AWS Management Console Notifications Center, email, AWS Chatbot, or mobile push notifications via the AWS Console Mobile App. These notifications keep users informed about critical events such as Amazon CloudWatch alarms. Users can define notification configurations as part of their infrastructure-as-code (IaC) practices and specify notifications for specific resource types within AWS CloudFormation templates.

AWS Expands Services to Additional Regions

AWS has extended the availability of existing services and instance types to more Regions:

  • Amazon EC2 M8g Instances in Europe (Stockholm): These instances offer larger sizes with up to three times more vCPUs and memory compared to Graviton3-based Amazon M7g instances. The AWS Graviton4 processors provide up to 40% faster performance for databases, 30% faster for web applications, and 45% faster for large Java applications compared to Graviton3 processors.
  • AWS Direct Connect in Querétaro, Mexico: This service establishes a private, physical network connection between AWS and users’ data centers, offices, or colocation environments, providing a more consistent network experience than public internet connections.
  • Amazon EC2 C7i-flex Instances in AWS GovCloud (US-West): These instances expand the EC2 Flex portfolio, offering price-performance benefits for compute-intensive workloads.
  • AWS Backup Organization-Wide Reports in AWS GovCloud (US) Regions: AWS Backup’s Audit Manager can now generate aggregated cross-account and cross-Region reports on data protection policies and retrieve operational data about backup and recovery activities.
  • Amazon OpenSearch Serverless in Asia Pacific (Hong Kong): This service simplifies running search and analytics workloads without the complexities of infrastructure management.
  • AWS Backup in Asia Pacific (Thailand): AWS Backup allows users to centrally manage backups, protect data from unintended or malicious actions, and restore data during loss incidents.
  • Amazon GuardDuty in Asia Pacific (Malaysia): This service monitors and detects anomalous behavior and security threats in AWS accounts, helping protect workloads and data.
  • Amazon EC2 R8g Instances in Additional Regions: These instances are ideal for memory-intensive workloads such as databases and real-time big data analytics.
  • Amazon EC2 I8g Instances in Europe (Frankfurt): I8g instances deliver optimal performance for storage-intensive workloads.
  • Amazon S3 Tables in Five Additional AWS Regions: Amazon S3 Tables, with built-in Apache Iceberg support, offer the easiest way to store tabular data at scale, optimized for analytics workloads.
