NewsFirst Impressions: Monster Hunter Wilds Chapter 1 Experience

Explore an Untamed New World in Monster Hunter Wilds Coming to PS5

Prepare yourself for an exhilarating journey into uncharted territories with the upcoming release of Monster Hunter Wilds on February 28 for the PlayStation 5. This highly anticipated game promises to deliver an action-packed experience, filled with enormous adversaries and breathtaking landscapes. Recently, we had the opportunity to delve into the main missions of Chapter 1, pitting our skills against formidable foes, including the newly introduced monster, Quematrice, and venturing into the captivating Scarlet Forest.

Weapons with Built-in Equipment Skills

In previous installments of the Monster Hunter series, players were accustomed to enhancing their hunting skills primarily through armor, talismans, and decorations. These components were strategically combined to optimize a hunter’s capabilities. Monster Hunter Wilds, however, introduces a fresh approach by equipping even the earliest available weapons with built-in Equipment Skills. These skills are specifically tailored to the weapon type, providing players with an enhanced experience right from the start. For instance, the Great Sword Buster Sword I comes with the Critical Draw skill, while the Bone Blade II offers Focus and Attack Boost. Additionally, the game allows players to switch between two weapons during a hunt, enabling them to utilize diverse skill combinations effectively. This feature encourages the strategic pairing of melee and ranged weapons, enhancing tactical flexibility.

Confronting the Brute Wyvern, Quematrice

As the adventure unfolds, players escort siblings through perilous terrain, eventually facing off against the Brute Wyvern, Quematrice—a new and menacing addition to the Monster Hunter Wilds roster. Provoking this beast leads to intense battles, as it retaliates with ferocious bites and spreads a flammable substance ignited by dragging its tail along the ground. This attack puts hunters in a Fireblight state, gradually depleting their health over time. In the initial main mission, players learn to counter this condition using Nulberries or employing tactical evasion techniques.

Seamless Journey from Windward Plains to Scarlet Forest

As the quest progresses, hunters set out to investigate the mysterious Doshagumas in the Scarlet Forest. The transition from the Windward Plains to this lush environment is seamless, showcasing the game’s vast and interconnected ecosystems. Players can ride their trusty companion, Seikret, all the way from the plains to the forest without returning to base. This fluid transition is free from loading screens, emphasizing the expansive nature of the game world.

The Scarlet Forest captivates with its towering trees and peculiar red-colored water, offering a stark contrast to the sandy deserts and rocky formations of the Windward Plains. Along the journey, players encounter unique creatures not found in previous areas and stumble upon a hideout inhabited by the Lynian tribe known as the Wudwuds. The allure of the Scarlet Forest’s unexplored depths adds an exciting layer of anticipation for the game’s official launch.

Beware of the Lala Barina’s Scarlet Silk and Potent Attacks

Within the dense embrace of the Scarlet Forest, hunters encounter their first major adversary—the Temnoceran, Lala Barina. This creature employs cunning tactics, launching attacks from unexpected angles, whether hanging from trees by its silk threads or swooping down from above for a surprise assault. When Lala Barina releases red spores, it reveals tufts of scarlet hair reminiscent of a blooming rose. While evading these spore attacks is crucial, getting hit can result in Paralysis, adding an element of danger to the encounter.

A Thrilling Hunt with the Congalala

Continuing the exploration of the Scarlet Forest, players come face-to-face with the Pink Fur Beast, Congalala. Though absent from Monster Hunter World, this fanged beast is a familiar presence from previous entries in the series. Its distinctive pink fur and notorious flatulence, capable of inflicting Stench status, make it a memorable adversary.

In addition to its gaseous attacks, Congalala boasts powerful belches that complicate battles with Stench-inducing moves. Carrying a sufficient supply of Deodorants becomes imperative for hunters aiming to cleanse themselves of the Stench mid-battle. Despite its size, Congalala exhibits surprising agility, delivering swift arm strikes that pack a punch. Moreover, it occasionally retreats into groups of smaller Congas, launching coordinated attacks as a pack.

A Deadly Struggle Against Scarlet Forest’s Apex Predator, Uth Duna

The culmination of Chapter 1 is marked by an intense battle with the apex predator of the Scarlet Forest—the formidable Leviathan, Uth Duna. This monstrous creature employs water-based attacks that inflict Waterblight, hindering stamina recovery and increasing the challenge for hunters. Its most awe-inspiring move involves a devastating body slam after leaping into the air, causing massive damage and toppling large trees in its path. During this attack, prioritizing evasion becomes paramount.

Facing Uth Duna is no small feat, but hunters receive invaluable support from Olivia, a member of the Forbidden Lands Expedition Team. With Uth Duna’s attention divided, players can seize opportunities to launch attacks from the sides or rear. However, Uth Duna exhibits a unique behavior—secreting bodily fluids that mix with water to form a protective veil around itself. This veil alters its appearance and reduces damage from the hunter’s assaults. To succeed, hunters must focus on targeting unprotected areas, utilizing Focus Mode to pinpoint vulnerable spots.

My playthrough concentrated on the primary missions of Chapter 1, leaving me eager to gather materials through optional quests and further explore the expansive and visually stunning world of Monster Hunter Wilds upon its release on February 28 for the PlayStation 5.
