Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny Remaster Set to Launch: What Fans Can Expect
The Onimusha series, a beloved franchise from the PlayStation 2 era, is experiencing a resurgence in popularity with the development of Onimusha: Way of the Sword. While a remastered version of the original Onimusha: Warlords has been available for some time, Capcom recently announced that Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny will also receive a remaster, set to release on May 23. This news has delighted fans who have long cherished the series for its unique style and gameplay.
We had the opportunity to speak with Motohide Eshiro, the original game director and a veteran at Capcom, to gain insight into what both new and returning players can expect from this remaster.
Enhancing the Gameplay Experience
Learning from Past Remasters
One of the key lessons the team learned from the remaster of the original Onimusha was the importance of refining the game controls. The original Onimusha 2 featured what is known as ‘tank controls,’ which could be challenging for some players. In the remaster, the team has successfully integrated more modern controls while still allowing fans of the original to switch back to the classic style if they prefer. This approach aims to reduce frustration without compromising the game’s difficulty.
Balancing Modernization with Tradition
Eshiro assured that while the controls have been modernized, the game’s difficulty remains unchanged. The Issen critical system, which is a core component of the combat mechanics, remains intact and just as challenging as in the original game. The critical system was finely balanced, and maintaining its integrity was important to the team.
Exploring the Ally System
Building Relationships for Strategic Advantage
A defining feature of Onimusha 2 is its ally system, where players can give gifts to other characters to build relationships. These allies then assist Jubei in battles and can sometimes be controlled directly by the player. This system adds depth to the gameplay, encouraging players to explore character interactions.
Preserving the Original Experience
The ally system has been preserved in the remaster without major changes. While the team considered adding indicators to show relationship status, they decided against it to maintain the depth and subtlety of character interactions. Players will need to rely on character reactions, expressions, and dialogue to gauge relationships.
Embracing New Challenges
Introducing the Hell Difficulty Mode
The remaster introduces a new optional Hell difficulty mode, where any hit results in instant death. This mode is designed as a challenge for players who boast about their skills and seek a test of their abilities. While not for everyone, this mode offers a unique experience of high-tension sword battles.
Encouraging Skillful Play
Eshiro admitted that even he has not completed the Hell mode, but assures that it is possible, as another team member has managed to do so. The mode is designed to be challenging yet rewarding, encouraging players to progress gradually and save frequently.
Adding Mini-Games for Variety
Diverse Gameplay with Mini-Games
The remaster includes several mini-games, such as The Man in Black, Team Oni, and Puzzle Phantom Realm. Team Oni allows players to switch between Jubei and allies, emphasizing strategic item use. Puzzle Phantom Realm challenges players with back-to-back puzzles, testing their problem-solving skills. The Man in Black features Jubei in a special black outfit, with a focus on collecting films instead of battling enemies. These mini-games offer a fresh experience, distinct from the main storyline.
Honoring a Legacy
Collaborations with Japanese Entertainment Icons
Onimusha 2 brought together numerous prominent figures in Japanese entertainment, including scriptwriter Noboru Sugimura, artist Keita Amemiya, and the likeness of actor Yusaku Matsuda. Sugimura’s deep knowledge of Japanese history greatly influenced the ally characters, while Amemiya’s distinctive designs shaped the game’s visuals. The likeness of Yusaku Matsuda was carefully crafted with input from his widow, Miyuki Matsuda, ensuring authenticity.
Reflecting on the Journey
Eshiro expressed his gratitude for returning as director for the remaster. He hopes that both new and veteran players will appreciate the quality-of-life improvements, making the game more accessible. His passion for the project is evident, and he looks forward to players experiencing Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny, whether they are revisiting the series or discovering it for the first time.
Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny is set to launch on PlayStation on May 23, offering fans and newcomers an enhanced experience of a timeless classic.
