NewsLennard Liebig's Journey: Online Student to HEC Paris Innovator

In the ever-evolving landscape of higher education, online learning has emerged as a powerful tool for those seeking to expand their knowledge and skills without the traditional constraints of geographic location or rigid schedules. Lennard Liebig’s journey through the realm of online education exemplifies how digital platforms are reshaping the way we learn and grow. With a background in international business, Lennard embarked on a transformative educational path, fueled by curiosity and a desire to innovate. His story is not just about acquiring knowledge; it’s about leveraging opportunities to create a meaningful impact in both his personal and professional life.

### From Digital Learning to Academic Advancement

Lennard’s exploration of online courses began with a simple goal: personal growth. Without the initial intent of obtaining a formal degree, he delved into subjects such as Python programming, statistics, and analytical thinking. These courses, offered by Coursera, provided him with a foundation that would eventually pave the way for more ambitious academic pursuits. His journey led him to discover the Online Innovation Management and Entrepreneurship University Certificate offered by HEC Paris on Coursera. This discovery marked a turning point, transforming Lennard’s casual learning into a structured educational path.

The certificate program, composed of five foundational courses, was a stepping stone that allowed Lennard to transfer the credits he earned towards a full master’s degree. This strategic decision set him on a new trajectory, ultimately leading to his enrollment in the online Master of Science (MSc) in Innovation and Entrepreneurship at HEC Paris. Now a part of the Spring 2025 graduating class, Lennard’s educational journey underscores the potential of online learning to bridge the gap between personal interest and formal education.

### The Genesis of an Academic Journey

“I was doing a lot of online courses back in 2020 and 2021,” Lennard recalls. “Python, statistics, analytical thinking—whatever I could find. I was already looking for something stackable and more long-term.” His search for a comprehensive and flexible learning experience led him to HEC Paris’s Online Innovation Management and Entrepreneurship University Certificate. By completing the rigorous coursework, Lennard not only earned a valuable certificate but also gained the eligibility to transfer those credits into the MSc program at HEC Paris.

For Lennard, the decision to pursue this particular master’s program was influenced by his desire to either undertake an MBA or pursue a path with a strong focus on entrepreneurship. “The idea of building something from scratch really appealed to me,” he reflects. In 2022, after successfully applying, Lennard was admitted into the full master’s program, allowing him to dive straight into advanced studies centered on project-based learning and thesis writing.

### Embracing Practical Learning and Team Innovation

One of the standout features of the HEC program for Lennard was its emphasis on hands-on, applied learning. “I was looking to add a specific dimension focused on practical application and venture creation,” he explains. HEC Paris, renowned globally for its business acumen, offered an environment where students could actively test and develop their startup ideas. This approach, moving from theoretical concepts to real-world execution, was exactly what Lennard was seeking.

Working on a group project, Lennard collaborated with professionals from diverse backgrounds, including London, Germany, and Peru, to develop a startup concept. This team-based innovation experience involved creating minimum viable products (MVPs) and pitching to actual venture capitalists, providing an invaluable learning experience that went beyond traditional classroom settings. “It was energizing to work with like-minded people,” Lennard shares. The program’s unique structure offered participants the chance to take their ideas beyond the course, adding an extra layer of value to their educational experience.

### Balancing Life, Learning, and Leadership

The past two years have been a whirlwind of activity for Lennard, encompassing both personal milestones and professional achievements. In October 2023, Lennard welcomed the birth of his daughter, Elisa, amidst the demands of exam season. Shortly after, he was promoted to lead the Process & Analysis team at his current employer, Mobilexpense. Juggling the responsibilities of fatherhood, a full-time job, and a rigorous master’s program presented its challenges, yet Lennard persevered.

His thesis, which focused on decarbonization in the oil industry, was a topic of deep personal interest. Despite the demanding schedule, Lennard successfully submitted his thesis in December 2024, earning his diploma “with distinction.” With plans to attend the in-person graduation ceremony in June, Lennard reflects on the journey with a sense of accomplishment. “I got up early in the morning to study and I studied on the weekends,” he recalls. “But at the end of the day, it’s rewarding and you feel accomplished. And that’s how I feel right now.”

### Advice for Future Learners: Commitment and Community

When asked what advice he would offer to future students, Lennard emphasizes the importance of dedication and perseverance. “You need to be committed. It’s not like you take a 5-week course and it’s done and dusted. It’s a long-term commitment,” he advises. For those balancing full-time work, Lennard suggests open communication with employers, whether they provide sponsorship or not, as conflicts with work may arise.

Engagement with the academic community is another key aspect of Lennard’s advice. “Use the resources. Schedule feedback sessions. Join webinars. Reach out to alumni,” he encourages. The program’s structure provides a window into the real world, offering invaluable insights and opportunities for students to present their ideas to venture capitalists.

For aspiring entrepreneurs, Lennard believes the program is a fertile ground for nurturing innovative ideas. “If you have a startup idea or even a customer pain point in mind, this program will help you bring it to life,” he assures. His message to those at the crossroads of career and curiosity is clear: “Follow your passion. Stay resilient. And remember—it’s all worth it in the end.”

Lennard Liebig’s journey through online education and the pursuit of a master’s degree highlights the transformative power of digital learning platforms like Coursera. By embracing the flexibility and accessibility of online courses, Lennard was able to turn his curiosity into a strategic educational path, ultimately achieving personal and professional growth. His story serves as an inspiration to those seeking to navigate the complex landscape of modern education, demonstrating that with commitment and community, the possibilities are endless.
