This opportunity involves the leasing of the Flight Research Building, which is steeped in history. The lease extends over a 10-year period, with the possibility of two additional five-year extensions. This arrangement is made possible through the National Historic Preservation Act agreement.

In May 2024, NASA initially revealed plans to lease the Flight Research Building alongside other facilities, leveraging the government’s Enhanced Use Lease authority. This authority plays a crucial role in allowing space, aeronautics, and other related industries to make use of NASA’s land and facilities. The overarching goal is to cut down on the agency’s maintenance costs while simultaneously encouraging strategic partnerships that could ignite new advancements and innovations.

Dr. Jimmy Kenyon, the center director at Glenn, expressed optimism about the center’s progress. “Glenn is making great progress as we modernize our Cleveland and Sandusky campuses to support NASA’s future missions,” he stated. The property available for lease encompasses approximately 6.7 acres of land. This includes the heated aircraft hangar, the Operations and Integration Building, a parking lot, and a tarmac. The hangar itself measures 160 feet by 280 feet, and the Operations and Integration Building spans 5,947 square feet. The funds generated from this leasing venture will be reinvested into maintaining the Glenn facilities and infrastructure.

Strategically located, Glenn’s hangar is visible from Brookpark Road and Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. This hangar holds historical significance as it was the first structure completed after the center’s establishment in 1941. Over the years, it has hosted a variety of unique aircraft that have played a pivotal role in vital research. This facility has contributed to numerous advancements, from studying ice accumulation on aircraft wings to pioneering the use of laser communications for streaming 4K video from aircraft to the International Space Station.
