Creating a successful video game involves a collaboration of various disciplines, each contributing their unique skills to bring the project to life. At Sandfall Interactive, the team behind the critically acclaimed RPG game Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, we faced challenges and made key decisions that ultimately led to the success of our game.
The journey of creating Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 began with our CEO, Guillaume Broche, working alone on early versions of the game in his bedroom. As the project progressed, our team expanded to twelve members with the goal of creating a vertical slice of the game. Our big break came when we met Kepler Interactive at the Game Developers Conference in 2022, who supported us in developing an Alpha build and expanding our team with artists and programmers.
One of our key principles at Sandfall Interactive is to prioritize player experience and creativity over extensive coding. This approach led us to choose the Unreal Engine for its core features and benefits, such as bug fixes and performance optimizations. While we may not be coding experts, our focus on maximizing creative freedom for designers guided our decision-making throughout the development process.
In order to empower our team and enable non-programmers to contribute to the game logic, we utilized Blueprint visual scripting in Unreal Engine. This system provides a node-based interface for scripting gameplay elements directly in the editor, allowing designers to implement various features without extensive coding knowledge. By leveraging Blueprints, our team was able to create intricate gameplay mechanics, character movements, visual effects, and more, enhancing the overall player experience.
The creation of assets and levels in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 involved a collaborative and creative approach. We repurposed elements from other levels to build the expansive world map, showcasing our commitment to efficiency and resourcefulness. By reusing art assets and maintaining consistency in enemy interactions and battles, we were able to streamline the development process and focus on delivering a cohesive gaming experience.
As game developers, we understand the importance of teamwork and collaboration in achieving our creative vision. By providing designers with the building blocks through Blueprints and encouraging experimentation, we foster a dynamic and innovative development environment. Our emphasis on simplifying processes and supporting each other’s strengths has been integral to the success of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is now available on PlayStation 5, offering players an immersive RPG experience. Additionally, PlayStation Plus subscribers can enjoy a two-hour trial of the game to explore its captivating world and engaging gameplay mechanics.
