Researchers like Jamie Shutler from the University of Exeter suggest that tectonic activity may also play a role in altering groundwater recharge rates into the lake.

“Given the large number of people who rely on this lake for food and their livelihoods,” Shutler stated, “the change we’re seeing from satellite imagery combined with stories of displacement is alarming.” He emphasized the need for further research to understand how much water volume is changing each year and what factors are driving these fluctuations.
