AI advances rural Australian heart health in innovative ways.

NewsAI advances rural Australian heart health in innovative ways.

Australia’s healthcare system is renowned globally, but the location where you reside within the country can still significantly impact your health outcomes. Shockingly, individuals living in remote Australian communities are 60% more likely to succumb to heart disease compared to those residing in metropolitan areas.

To address this disparity, a groundbreaking partnership has been formed with some of Australia’s leading health organizations. This collaboration involves integrating Google’s AI technology with community-based care to revolutionize the delivery of support to those in need.

This innovative initiative, a first of its kind in the Asia-Pacific region, is spearheaded by Wesfarmers Health and its SISU Health division, along with the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute and Latrobe Health Services. The project has received a $1 million AUD investment from Google Australia’s Digital Future Initiative (DFI) and leverages Google for Health’s Population Health AI (PHAI) platform.

PHAI serves as an advanced analytics engine that can identify hidden health risks within communities. By providing valuable insights, the aim is to empower partners to transition from reactive problem-solving to proactive management of chronic conditions.

Health is a multifaceted concept influenced by various factors beyond medical consultations, such as environmental conditions, access to healthcare, availability of fresh produce, and air quality. To capture this complexity, PHAI utilizes Google Earth AI’s Population Dynamics Foundation Models (PDFM) in conjunction with essential datasets like air quality, pollen levels, and location insights.

Through the analysis of diverse and aggregated datasets, including clinical records and geographic information, the model uncovers patterns at a community level while safeguarding individual privacy. This enables health organizations to move away from a generic approach and tailor interventions to the specific needs of a particular area.

By harnessing the power of AI and combining it with on-the-ground community care, this partnership aims to revolutionize healthcare delivery in remote Australian communities and ultimately improve health outcomes for all individuals, regardless of their location. This collaborative effort underscores the potential for technology to address healthcare disparities and enhance the well-being of populations across the country.
