These collaborations focus on pioneering advanced energy generation and storage technologies that promise to enhance the reliability and sustainability of the power grid. Harnessing Solar Power From Space
Traditional solar facilities are limited by their dependence on sunlight, generating electricity only during daylight hours. Overview Energy seeks to overcome this limitation through a groundbreaking approach that involves harnessing solar power from space. The company’s satellites, positioned in geosynchronous orbit approximately 22,000 miles above the equator, collect solar energy continuously and transmit it back to Earth as low-intensity, near-infrared light. This innovation allows solar farms to generate electricity around the clock, significantly increasing their output and contributing more energy to the grid.
The ground-based solar facilities can convert this received beam into electricity just as they do with direct sunlight, without requiring additional land or new grid infrastructure. To address this challenge, Meta has partnered with Noon Energy, which specializes in ultra-long-duration energy storage using modular, reversible solid oxide fuel cells combined with carbon-based storage systems. This innovative technology is capable of delivering over 100 hours of energy storage—far exceeding the capabilities of conventional lithium-ion batteries.
As part of this collaboration, Meta has reserved up to 1 GW/100 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of long-duration storage capacity. An initial pilot project featuring a 25 megawatt (MW)/2.5 GWh demonstration is slated for completion by 2028. This commitment represents one of the largest investments in ultra-long-duration storage within the industry and sets a precedent for how technology firms can maintain continuous power supply for AI and cloud operations.
