AWS Launches Interconnect for Enhanced Multicloud Connectivity

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced the general availability of AWS Interconnect, a managed private connectivity service designed to facilitate seamless connections between Amazon Virtual Private Clouds (VPCs) and other cloud providers. This service, which debuted on [insert date], aims to simplify the process of establishing reliable, high-speed connections across hybrid and multicloud environments, addressing the growing need for enterprises to manage workloads across multiple platforms.

Understanding AWS Interconnect

AWS Interconnect addresses a significant challenge faced by large enterprises that increasingly operate across various cloud platforms. These companies often require specialized services, must comply with data residency regulations, or support teams that prefer different cloud providers. Historically, connecting these disparate environments has been cumbersome, involving complex management of VPN tunnels and third-party network configurations. AWS Interconnect seeks to streamline this process.

The service offers two primary capabilities: multicloud connectivity and last-mile connectivity. Multicloud connectivity allows users to establish private, managed Layer 3 connections between their AWS environment and other cloud providers—initially with Google Cloud and later with Microsoft Azure in 2026. Last-mile connectivity simplifies the establishment of high-speed connections from branch offices or data centers directly to AWS through existing network providers.

Key Features of AWS Interconnect

AWS Interconnect provides a fully managed experience that eliminates the infrastructure complexities traditionally associated with cloud networking. Users can set up resilient, end-to-end connections in just a few clicks via the AWS Console by selecting their location, partner provider, preferred region, and bandwidth requirements.

The multicloud aspect of AWS Interconnect ensures that data traffic flows entirely over the AWS global backbone and the partner cloud’s private network without traversing the public internet. This configuration guarantees predictable latency and consistent throughput while isolating users from internet congestion. Security is inherently integrated into every connection through IEEE 802.1AE MACsec encryption on physical links between AWS routers and partner cloud routers.

Resiliency is another critical feature; each connection spans multiple logical links across at least two physical facilities, ensuring uninterrupted connectivity even in the event of device or building failures. Additionally, monitoring capabilities are built in through integration with Amazon CloudWatch, providing metrics for latency, packet loss, and bandwidth utilization.

Provisioning Connections Made Simple

The provisioning process for establishing a connection using AWS Interconnect is designed to be straightforward. Users initiate the connection from the AWS Direct Connect console by selecting their desired provider—such as Google Cloud—and specifying source and destination regions along with bandwidth requirements. An activation key is generated for use on the partner side to complete the connection setup.

This ease of use extends to both sides of the connection; once initiated on AWS, users can quickly configure peering resources on Google Cloud using command-line tools or through available web interfaces as they become accessible.

AWS Interconnect – Last Mile

In addition to multicloud capabilities, AWS also introduced AWS Interconnect – last mile. This feature enables organizations to connect their on-premises infrastructure or remote locations directly to AWS through participating network providers’ last-mile infrastructure. The onboarding process mirrors that of multicloud connectivity: users select a provider, authenticate their connection endpoints, and specify bandwidth needs.

This service automatically provisions redundant connections across multiple physical locations while configuring BGP routing and enabling MACsec encryption by default. The result is a robust private connection that adheres to best practices without requiring manual configuration from users.

Pricing and Availability

AWS Interconnect services are priced based on a flat hourly rate determined by the requested capacity. Pricing varies by region pair; for instance, rates differ for connections between US East (N. Virginia) and Google Cloud N. Virginia compared to more distant regions. Currently available in five region pairs—including US East (N. Virginia) to Google Cloud N. Virginia—AWS plans further expansion with Microsoft Azure support expected in 2026.

AWS Interconnect – last mile is initially launching in US East (N. Virginia), partnering with Lumen Technologies as its first collaborator. Other partnerships are underway with AT&T and Megaport for future expansion into additional regions.

What This Means

The launch of AWS Interconnect marks a significant advancement in simplifying multicloud networking for enterprises. By providing a managed service that reduces complexity while enhancing security and performance, organizations can focus more on application development rather than networking challenges. As businesses increasingly adopt hybrid strategies involving multiple cloud providers, solutions like AWS Interconnect will play a crucial role in facilitating seamless operations across diverse environments.
