Perseverance Rover’s Continuing Journey on Mars: New Discoveries and Challenges

The rock fractured during the process, resulting in an uneven surface. This posed a problem for the SHERLOC instrument, which requires a smooth surface to function correctly. However, PIXL was able to adapt to the uneven surface and continue its scan.

Overcoming Challenges with Ingenuity

Faced with this challenge, the engineering and planning teams devised a creative solution. They decided to utilize WATSON, a camera that works alongside the SHERLOC instrument, to capture images of the fractured surface from different angles. These images allowed the team to construct a detailed surface model, revealing the small cracks and crevices in the rock. Armed with this new perspective, the team successfully maneuvered SHERLOC to the same location PIXL had analyzed, enabling them to gather a co-located spectroscopy map.

Once the abrasion proximity science was completed, Perseverance proceeded to drill and seal a core sample from the Main River area. This process went smoothly, adding another valuable sample to the collection that will eventually be brought back to Earth for further study.

With the Main River core safely collected, Perseverance is now ready to move on to its next area of interest. The rover’s journey across the Martian surface is far from over, as it continues to tackle new challenges and make groundbreaking discoveries.
