The Air Power Over Hampton Roads air show, held from April 25 to 27 at Joint Base Langley-Eustis (JBLE) in Hampton, Virginia, provided a platform for NASA Langley Research Center to display its significant contributions to aviation past, present, and future. Bonnie Murray, the Student Services Manager for Langley OSTEM, expressed the importance of such events, stating, “Participation in the air show allows us to share NASA’s work in aeronautics with the public and provides an opportunity for Langley researchers and engineers to work directly with students and families to share the exciting work they do.”

Throughout the weekend, the STEM Expo continued to captivate visitors. At NASA’s booths, attendees engaged in hands-on activities such as testing paper helicopters in a small-scale wind tunnel to learn about flight dynamics. Students also discovered how NASA employs X-planes for research, designed their own X-plane models, and tested experimental paper airplanes. These activities not only provided fun but also introduced students to the engineering design process. Murray further explained, “Through engagement in the NASA STEM Zone activities, students had an opportunity to see themselves in the role of a NASA researcher. Authentic learning experiences such as these help build children’s STEM identity, increasing the likelihood of them pursuing STEM careers in the future.”

A focal point of the air show was the array of static aircraft displays, featuring NASA Langley’s Cirrus Design SR22. This research aircraft plays a pivotal role in supporting NASA’s airborne science program, contributing to both the scientific community and aeronautics research. The SR22 was accompanied by several small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) and NASA’s P-3 Orion, a research aircraft stationed at NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility on Wallops Island, Virginia.

Glenn Jamison, Director of Langley’s Research Services Directorate, highlighted the significance of NASA Langley’s participation, stating, “Reflective of our strong, long-standing partnership with JBLE, NASA Langley was proud to participate in this year’s Air Power Over Hampton Roads air show. Our relationship spans back to 1917 when NACA and Langley Field evolved together over formative years in aerodynamic research, sharing the airspace and facilities here in Hampton. Today, we continue our collaboration with JBLE in pursuing shared interests and finding innovative solutions to complex problems.”

Visitors to the air show were treated to a visual journey through NASA Langley’s storied aviation history.
