Germany Embraces Industrial AI: A Leap Towards the Future

In a significant move towards enhancing its technological prowess, Germany is on the verge of establishing itself as a leader in industrial artificial intelligence (AI). Following notable events like the London Tech Week and GTC Paris at VivaTech, Jensen Huang, the founder and CEO of NVIDIA, made a pivotal stop in Germany. Here, he engaged in discussions with Chancellor Friedrich Merz regarding groundbreaking partnerships that aim to launch the world’s first industrial AI cloud.

This ambitious AI factory, set to be operational in Germany under the management of Deutsche Telekom, is designed to propel Europe’s industrial sector forward. The facility will support various manufacturing applications, such as design, engineering, simulation, digital twins, and robotics. By housing Europe’s first industrial AI infrastructure, this initiative aims to empower the region’s industrial giants to adopt simulation-first, AI-driven manufacturing practices.

A Vision for Dual Factories

Jensen Huang emphasized the necessity for manufacturers to embrace a dual-factory model. "In the era of AI, every manufacturer needs two factories: one for making things, and one for creating the intelligence that powers them," he stated. This dual approach ensures that both physical production and intelligent systems development are given equal importance, paving the way for a more efficient and innovative manufacturing landscape.

Timotheus Höttges, CEO of Deutsche Telekom AG, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the urgency of embracing AI. "Europe’s technological future needs a sprint, not a stroll," he asserted. Höttges underscored the importance of rapid decision-making and collaborative innovation to secure a leading position in the global tech arena. The success of Europe’s economy, he noted, is contingent upon quick adaptations and innovations in AI.

Germany’s Largest AI Deployment

This project marks Germany’s largest AI deployment to date, playing a crucial role in establishing the nation’s sovereign AI infrastructure. Sovereign AI refers to a region’s ability to develop and control its AI technologies independently. The initiative is set to launch with 10,000 NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs, integrated into NVIDIA DGX GB200 systems and NVIDIA RTX PRO Servers. These high-performance components, along with NVIDIA’s networking and AI software, will form the backbone of the AI infrastructure.

A notable collaboration involves NEURA Robotics, a pioneering German company in physical AI and cognitive robotics. NEURA Robotics will leverage the AI cloud’s computing resources for its cutting-edge training centers for cognitive robots. These centers exemplify how physical AI can evolve and thrive with robust, connected infrastructure.

At the heart of this endeavor is the Neuraverse, a networked ecosystem for robots that facilitates shared learning across diverse industrial and domestic applications. This platform functions like an app store for robotic intelligence, enabling continuous development and deployment of skills such as welding and ironing in real-world environments.

David Reger, founder and CEO of NEURA Robotics, likened physical AI to electricity, asserting, "Physical AI is the electricity of the future — it will power every machine on the planet." Through this initiative, NEURA Robotics is contributing to the sovereign infrastructure necessary for Europe to lead in intelligent robotics and maintain control over its technological future.

Meeting the Growing Demand for Data Centers

A Deloitte study emphasizes the strategic importance of expanding data center capacity to bolster Germany’s competitiveness in AI technology development. The demand for data center capacity is expected to triple to 5 gigawatts over the next five years, underscoring the urgency of this expansion.

Driving Germany’s Industrial Ecosystem

Deutsche Telekom will oversee the operation of the AI factory and provide AI cloud computing resources to Europe’s industrial sector. This facility will support a range of applications, allowing customers to utilize NVIDIA CUDA-X libraries, as well as NVIDIA RTX- and Omniverse-accelerated workloads. These resources are available through leading software providers such as Siemens, Ansys, Cadence, and Rescale.

The AI factory’s impact is far-reaching, benefiting Germany’s robust small- and medium-sized businesses, known as the Mittelstand, as well as academia, research institutions, and major enterprises. This initiative presents strategic technology advancements that could redefine Germany’s industrial landscape.

A Speedboat Toward AI Gigafactories

The industrial AI cloud will catalyze the development and adoption of AI technologies among European manufacturers, fostering a shift towards simulation-first, AI-driven manufacturing practices. This transformation is a precursor to the establishment of AI gigafactories, which represent the next phase in Germany’s sovereign AI infrastructure journey.

The AI gigafactory initiative, backed by the European Union, Germany, and various partners, envisions a 100,000 GPU-powered program. Scheduled to be operational by 2027, it will provide cutting-edge AI infrastructure, granting enterprises, startups, researchers, and universities access to accelerated computing via high-performance computing centers.

As of March, approximately 900 Germany-based members of the NVIDIA Inception program, which supports innovative startups, will be eligible to access the AI resources. NVIDIA also offers educational courses through its Deep Learning Institute, promoting AI education and certification globally. These resources are readily accessible across Germany’s computing ecosystem, facilitating upskilling opportunities.

In addition to the AI cloud, European telecom companies are constructing AI infrastructure to support regional enterprises in developing and deploying agentic AI applications. Agentic AI refers to systems capable of autonomous decision-making, enhancing efficiency across various applications.
