At DigitalOcean, our primary focus is to ensure simplicity for our community of developers and businesses, allowing them to dedicate more time to building applications rather than managing infrastructure complexities.
We are thrilled to announce the General Availability (GA) launch of our new Agent for DigitalOcean Managed Kubernetes (DOKS) backups through SnapShooter, a solution provided by DigitalOcean. This new feature simplifies the process of creating and managing database backups within your DigitalOcean Kubernetes clusters.
Many customers have expressed challenges in setting up DOKS clusters and ensuring reliable backups. With this new Agent-based solution, we aim to address these issues effectively. Consequently, we have deprecated support for Velero through SnapShooter and shifted our focus towards a more streamlined backup process that concentrates on database backups in DOKS.
The introduction of this feature allows users to install the Agent into their desired namespace and container with a single click. This setup enables immediate management of backup jobs. Similar to other backup options available through SnapShooter, users can easily configure backup frequency, retention policies, and storage locations.
Pricing
SnapShooter charges a management fee based on the number of backup jobs you run. It offers various pricing plans, with Kubernetes backups supported across all tiers. For example, if you are subscribed to the Startup tier, you can run up to 20 backup jobs. Setting up a single backup job for a DOKS cluster counts as one backup, allowing you to use the remaining 19 slots for other backup jobs. Essentially, the pricing structure for backups remains consistent, irrespective of the job type.
It is important to note that volume snapshots and backup storage costs are billed separately if you opt to use your own storage solutions.

In addition to the primary announcement, it is worth noting some background and supplementary information for those less familiar with the technical jargon:
Understanding DigitalOcean Kubernetes (DOKS)
Kubernetes is an open-source platform designed to automate the deployment, scaling, and operation of application containers. DigitalOcean Kubernetes, or DOKS, simplifies the process of managing Kubernetes clusters by handling the underlying infrastructure, offering a scalable and reliable environment for containerized applications.
The Role of SnapShooter
SnapShooter is a backup management tool that integrates with DigitalOcean to provide seamless backup solutions for various resources including databases, files, and now, Kubernetes clusters. By offering easy-to-use backup management, SnapShooter ensures that your data is consistently protected and readily available for recovery when needed.
What is a Backup Agent?
A backup agent is a software component that runs on the server or cluster, responsible for performing backup tasks. In the context of the new DOKS backup agent, it simplifies the process of creating backups by automating the necessary steps and providing an interface for managing these tasks efficiently.
Benefits of the New Backup Agent
The new backup agent offers several advantages:
- Simplified Installation: Install the agent in your chosen namespace and container with a single click.
- Immediate Availability: Begin managing backup jobs almost instantly after installation.
- Customizable Settings: Easily set backup frequencies, retention policies, and storage locations.
- Decreased Complexity: Addresses the setup challenges and reliability issues faced by users with previous solutions.
Customer Reactions
Early adopters of the new backup agent have expressed positive feedback, highlighting the ease of use and reliability improvements over previous methods. Many have noted the streamlined process has saved valuable time and reduced the need for manual intervention, allowing them to focus more on development and less on infrastructure management.
Conclusion
With the launch of the new backup agent for DOKS through SnapShooter, DigitalOcean continues to prioritize user-friendly solutions that simplify infrastructure management. This new feature not only addresses previous challenges but also enhances the overall backup process, ensuring data reliability and availability for all users.
We encourage our users to explore this new feature and take advantage of the enhanced backup capabilities it offers. For more detailed information and to get started, visit the DigitalOcean Marketplace or the SnapShooter website.
