Samsung and NVIDIA Collaborate to Advance AI-RAN Technologies

In a significant move to enhance the capabilities of mobile networks, Samsung Electronics has announced a partnership with NVIDIA. The collaboration aims to push forward the development of Artificial Intelligence for Radio Access Networks (AI-RAN), highlighting Samsung’s dedication to creating a robust ecosystem and diversifying computing platforms. By working closely with NVIDIA, Samsung seeks to simplify the adoption of AI in mobile networks by expanding the ecosystem of Central Processing Units (CPUs) and forming strong alliances with Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) companies.

Since early 2024, Samsung has made substantial progress in integrating AI into Radio Access Networks (RAN) by leveraging its internal expertise in AI and radio technologies. A significant milestone in this journey was the successful interoperability between Samsung’s O-RAN compliant virtualized RAN (vRAN) and NVIDIA’s accelerated computing solutions. This achievement, conducted at Samsung Research’s lab last year, demonstrated how NVIDIA’s advanced computing can be seamlessly integrated into software-based networks, enhancing their AI capabilities.

This milestone strengthens Samsung’s commitment to innovating AI-RAN technologies. With this foundation, Samsung can efficiently deliver AI-RAN by merging its virtualized Distributed Unit (vDU) with NVIDIA’s accelerated computing technology. This integration is achieved on a commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) server, where Samsung’s vRAN software is installed, allowing for the seamless deployment of AI-RAN.

Samsung showcased these advancements at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025, where it demonstrated the real-world application of its vRAN combined with NVIDIA’s accelerated computing technologies.

Beyond this, Samsung and NVIDIA will continue exploring optimal combinations of AI-RAN solutions by leveraging Samsung’s vRAN with NVIDIA’s Grace CPU and/or GPU-based AI platform. This exploration utilizes Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA) technologies, which are ideal for various network deployment environments, ranging from rural to dense urban settings.

Demonstrations at MWC 2025

During the MWC 2025, Samsung highlighted its leadership in AI-for-RAN innovations through two key demonstrations, supported by the AI-RAN Alliance. Developed in collaboration with various members, including NVIDIA, these demonstrations included AI-based physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) estimation and non-uniform modulation. These innovations provided a glimpse into the innovative ways AI can be infused into mobile networks.

Leadership and Vision

"AI is reshaping the telecommunications landscape, and Samsung is helping operators build the right network architecture and environment where AI can thrive, all powered by our proven AI-powered vRAN," stated June Moon, Executive Vice President and Head of R&D, Networks Business at Samsung Electronics. He further emphasized that the collaboration with NVIDIA represents Samsung’s ongoing efforts to expand the CPU and GPU ecosystem, with a keen interest in exploring further possibilities.

Ronnie Vasishta, Senior Vice President for Telecom at NVIDIA, added, "AI-RAN is a critical technology that delivers transformative gains in network utilization, efficiency, and performance while enabling new AI services. Samsung is a frontrunner in AI-RAN development. Their vRAN expertise and software, integrated with NVIDIA’s AI accelerated computing, will accelerate the path to AI-native wireless networks."

As a founding member of the AI-RAN Alliance, formed in 2024, Samsung is actively contributing to advancing AI-RAN technologies alongside academic institutions and industry leaders like NVIDIA. Samsung holds a leadership position as the Vice Chair of the Board of Directors and the leader of Working Group #3 (AI-on-RAN), steering the industry towards AI-enhanced next-generation networks.

A Vision for the Future

Samsung’s end-to-end software-based network architecture provides an optimal foundation for deploying and adopting AI across every layer of the network. This architecture empowers operators with flexible networks, enhancing their competitive edge in the AI era. This advancement not only revolutionizes mobile communication networks but also opens opportunities for processing general workloads, offering a data center-like network architecture that presents new business opportunities.

Samsung is at the forefront of delivering comprehensive 5G solutions, including chipsets, radios, and cores. Through continuous research and development, Samsung propels the industry forward in advancing 5G networks. It boasts a market-leading product portfolio that includes vRAN 3.0, Open RAN, core to private network solutions, and AI-powered automation tools and applications. The company currently provides innovative network solutions to mobile operators and enterprises, ensuring seamless connectivity for hundreds of millions of users worldwide.

In conclusion, Samsung’s partnership with NVIDIA marks a significant step in the evolution of AI-RAN technologies. This collaboration not only enhances the capabilities of mobile networks but also sets the stage for future innovations that will define the next generation of wireless communication. As AI continues to redefine the telecommunications landscape, Samsung is poised to lead the charge with its cutting-edge solutions and robust ecosystem.
