Samsung Unveils 14-Meter Onyx Cinema LED Display at CinemaCon 2026
Samsung Electronics has introduced a new 14-meter standard size for its Onyx cinema LED display lineup at CinemaCon 2026, a significant move aimed at enhancing the premium cinema experience. This latest model is tailored for Premium Large Format (PLF) theaters, offering the same high-quality picture and reliability that the Onyx brand is known for, but on a larger scale. The announcement was made during the annual convention held in Las Vegas from April 13 to April 16.
Meeting Demand for Larger Formats
The cinema industry is increasingly prioritizing larger-format auditoriums as they strive to provide unique experiences that cannot be replicated at home. Samsung’s new 14-meter Onyx display responds to this trend by enabling enhanced immersion, optimized seating arrangements, and more efficient use of theater space. Hyoung Jae Kim, Executive Vice President of Samsung’s Visual Display Business, emphasized the importance of creating a premium moviegoing experience. “People go to premium theaters for something they cannot recreate at home,” he stated, highlighting the need for high-quality screens in larger auditoriums.
Technical Specifications and Features
Since its inception in 2017, the Samsung Onyx lineup has set new standards for cinema LED technology with features like deep blacks, vibrant colors, and exceptional contrast ratios. The introduction of the 14-meter model follows last year’s successful launches of smaller formats designed for boutique and premium theaters. This new display maintains core features such as support for up to 4K resolution at 120Hz, ensuring sharp images and smooth motion.
- 3.3mm pixel pitch: This specification is optimized for the 14-meter format, delivering sharp and consistent image quality across a larger screen.
- Flexible scaling support: The design allows expansion up to 20 meters by adding individual LED cabinets on the sides and bottom without compromising presentation quality.
The Onyx display holds the distinction of being the world’s first Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI)-certified cinema LED screen. It supports both scope (2.39:1) and flat (1.85:1) aspect ratios while featuring Samsung’s HDR technology that achieves peak brightness levels up to 300 nits—approximately six times brighter than conventional cinema standards. Additionally, it offers 100% color volume at peak brightness and an infinite contrast ratio, resulting in true black levels that enhance immersion and detail in darker scenes.
Beyond traditional films, the Onyx display is versatile enough to accommodate various types of content including live sports events, concerts, gaming sessions, and corporate presentations. Unlike conventional projection systems that may suffer from inconsistencies based on screen size or viewer position, the Onyx LED screen ensures uniform brightness and image quality throughout any auditorium configuration. Its compatibility with Dolby and GDC media servers simplifies theater management as well.
Global Adoption and Impact on Cinemas
The latest Onyx models have seen significant adoption in premium cinemas worldwide since their launch last year. A notable installation is at Pathé Dar Essalam in Rabat, Morocco, where Onyx displays have been integrated into a newly developed luxury cinema complex. This venue aims to serve as a flagship destination similar to Pathé Palace in Paris and features multiple auditoriums equipped with various sizes of Onyx displays.
In the United States, Trilith Cinemas in Fayetteville, Georgia became the first theater to showcase this latest generation of Samsung Onyx screens across five auditoriums in December 2025. Positioned within an active production community, Trilith Cinemas aims to deliver an experience that aligns with both visual detail and creative intent inherent in film production.
Bo Chambliss, President of Georgia Theatre Company, remarked on the partnership with Samsung as a pivotal step toward enhancing audience experiences through innovations that prioritize image performance while remaining true to filmmakers’ intentions.
CinemaCon Showcase
CinemaCon attendees can explore Samsung’s latest innovations at their booth located in Roman Ballroom 1 & 2 at Caesars Palace during this year’s event. Alongside the new Onyx cinema LED display, visitors will also find demonstrations of glasses-free 3D spatial signage and a new 115-inch digital signage display.
What This Means
The introduction of Samsung’s 14-meter Onyx cinema LED display marks a significant advancement in how theaters can elevate their offerings to meet changing consumer expectations for immersive experiences. As cinemas continue adapting to market demands for larger formats and superior image quality, this development not only enhances audience engagement but also positions exhibitors like Pathé and Trilith Cinemas as leaders in providing cutting-edge entertainment environments.
