Samsung Unveils New Update for SmartThings Platform

NewsSamsung Unveils New Update for SmartThings Platform

Samsung Electronics has recently announced a significant update to its global connected living platform known as SmartThings, aiming to further enhance the experience of AI-driven smart homes. This update introduces new features and improvements that are designed to offer a more convenient and seamlessly connected lifestyle for users around the globe, with updates being rolled out every quarter.

The centerpiece of this latest update is the integration between SmartThings and Samsung Health, which is specifically designed to improve users’ sleep environments. This integration allows for more personalized automation experiences. Additionally, the update broadens the scope of Calm Onboarding to support a wider range of devices and introduces compatibility with the Matter 1.4 standard.

According to Jaeyeon Jung, Executive Vice President and Head of SmartThings at Samsung Electronics, this latest update underscores Samsung’s commitment to creating a more intuitive, connected, and personalized smart home experience. “We’re excited to continue pushing the boundaries of smart home innovation by empowering users through enhanced personalization and automation, including sleep wellness,” she stated.

### Enhanced Sleep Environments with Samsung Health Integration

The integration with Samsung Health aims to optimize sleep environments by providing detailed insights into key factors affecting sleep quality. These factors include temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide levels, and light intensity, all monitored through connected devices and sensors. Users receive a summary of the previous night’s sleep conditions, along with personalized suggestions for improvement.

When paired with a Galaxy Watch or Galaxy Ring, SmartThings can automatically adjust the environment based on the user’s actual sleep and wake times. For example, users can set routines to turn off lights and the TV at bedtime or to open curtains and play music in the morning, creating a more personalized wake-up experience.

### Increased Flexibility with SmartThings Routines

The latest update introduces greater flexibility in SmartThings routines by supporting automation based on recurring schedules, whether they are weekly, monthly, or annual. This feature allows for a wide range of scenarios, such as automatically changing the color of smart lights to celebrate birthdays or other special occasions.

Furthermore, SmartThings routines are now integrated with Samsung TV Plus on 2025 Samsung TV models. This integration allows users to incorporate their entertainment preferences into their smart home routines. For instance, users can set the TV to turn on the news in the morning or switch to a favorite channel at a preset time, ensuring they never miss a show.

### Broadcasting Through SmartThings-Connected Speakers

A new broadcasting feature enables users to send voice messages across SmartThings-connected speakers, making in-home communication more efficient. For example, if a parent is away, they can send a voice message through the SmartThings app, which will automatically play on the designated home speaker, keeping family members connected no matter where they are.

### Expanding Calm Onboarding to More Devices

Since late 2023, Samsung has been offering the Calm Onboarding feature, which simplifies the setup process for Samsung home appliances purchased through official channels by connecting the entire product journey—from order and delivery to connection with the SmartThings app.

With the latest update, Samsung is extending Calm Onboarding beyond its own products to include compatible third-party smart home devices. This expansion aims to provide a more seamless and intuitive connectivity experience. Users purchasing SmartThings-compatible devices directly from Samsung.com will receive purchase and delivery updates within the SmartThings app, along with step-by-step onboarding instructions to simplify product setup. Initially, this rollout will begin in Korea, with plans to expand to other countries in the future.

### Support for Matter 1.4

In its continuous efforts to advance the Internet of Things (IoT) landscape, SmartThings is expanding its support for the Matter 1.4 standard. The latest version includes a wide range of energy management devices, such as water heaters, heat pumps, solar power devices, battery storage devices, mounted on/off control switches, and mounted dimmable load control devices. These newly supported device categories build on existing popular device types like lights, thermostats, switches, air conditioners, air purifiers, fans, and door locks.

By integrating AI-powered routines, broadening device compatibility, and adopting the latest Matter standard, SmartThings reinforces its ongoing commitment to innovation. This commitment is directed towards making connected homes more intelligent, energy-efficient, and seamless for users and their families.

In summary, Samsung’s latest update to SmartThings is a significant step forward in enhancing the AI-driven home experience. With its focus on personalized automation, improved sleep environments, and expanded device compatibility, this update aims to provide users with a more integrated and convenient smart home experience.
