Pre-Orders Open for Directive 8020, a New Sci-Fi Horror Game
Directive 8020, the latest offering from Supermassive Games, is now available for pre-order ahead of its release on May 12 for Xbox Series X|S. This cinematic sci-fi survival horror game features a gripping narrative where players must navigate through a space mission gone awry, battling both alien threats and moral dilemmas that could determine the fate of humanity.
Cinematic Performance Led by Lashana Lynch
The game stars Hollywood actress Lashana Lynch, known for her roles in “Bob Marley: One Love” and “The Woman King,” as the astronaut Young. Players will follow her journey as she attempts to save her crew from an alien organism that has begun to take over their ship. The immersive storytelling and horror elements promise to deliver an engaging experience set against the backdrop of deep space.

A Mission Where Every Choice Matters
In Directive 8020, Earth faces imminent destruction, and the crew aboard the colony ship Cassiopeia must navigate their way through a catastrophic malfunction after crash-landing on the planet Tau Ceti f. As they grapple with survival against an alien organism capable of mimicking its prey, players are faced with critical choices that impact not just their survival but also the lives of those back on Earth.
The game emphasizes decision-making, where every action carries weight. For example, early gameplay involves rerouting power from either the landing computer or the fire suppression system—each choice leading to different consequences. Such dilemmas are woven throughout the narrative, ensuring that players must think strategically about their actions.

Trust No One
Drawing inspiration from classic sci-fi horror films like “The Thing,” Directive 8020 introduces an alien lifeform that can perfectly imitate its prey. This creates an atmosphere of paranoia among crew members as they struggle to discern friend from foe. The alien threat evolves through three distinct stages: initially appearing human-like, then mutating into grotesque hybrids, and finally transforming into a fast and deadly predator known as ‘the hunter.’ Players are advised to avoid direct contact with these creatures at all costs.

A New Kind of Threat
Exploration has always been a key component in Supermassive’s games; however, Directive 8020 introduces stealth mechanics that add a new layer of tension. Players must navigate the dark corridors of the Cassiopeia while avoiding detection by mimics and hunters sensitive to sound and light. The character is equipped with a scanner capable of identifying organic matter through walls, making it an essential tool for survival in this hostile environment.

Rewind Your Fate with Turning Points
For the first time in The Dark Pictures series, Directive 8020 introduces a feature called Turning Points. This allows players to revisit critical decisions using a visual branching story tree. With two playstyle modes—Explorer and Survivor—players can choose whether to rewind their choices or face the consequences head-on. Explorer mode enables players to change decisions at pivotal moments, while Survivor mode presents a more challenging experience without any safety net.
This new feature adds depth to multiplayer experiences as well; in Movie Night mode, players can collectively decide whether to accept dire outcomes or attempt to alter them by rewinding time.

Don’t Play Alone
Directive 8020 supports both single-player and multiplayer experiences. In Movie Night mode, up to five players can collaborate by passing around the controller and making collective decisions throughout the story. An online multiplayer option will be available as a free post-launch update, further enhancing social interaction during gameplay.
