Exploring the Intriguing World of FBC: Firebreak: A New Era in Paranatural Gaming

In the heart of Remedy Entertainment’s headquarters, a unique gaming experience is unfolding. As I, along with two other writers, engage in an exclusive first look at the upcoming game, "FBC: Firebreak," we encounter a baffling, shifting mass of black and grey. This enigmatic entity, unsettling in its chaotic movements within the Quarry, turns out to be an Astral Spike, a familiar yet formidable foe from the game’s predecessor, "Control." Despite our realization, it was too late, as the Astral Spike proved as lethal as ever, echoing its menace from the past.

Launching on June 17 for the PlayStation 5, "FBC: Firebreak" is set to captivate audiences with its engaging first-person, squad-based shooter mechanics. Here’s a deeper dive into my extensive gameplay sessions where I navigated the paranatural challenges of the Oldest House.

Teamwork: The Core of Survival

The game emphasizes the importance of teamwork, requiring players to form a trio to tackle its player vs. environment (PvE) setup. This setup revolves around "Crisis Kits," the game’s classification for different player roles. I chose the Jump Kit, which excels in crowd control and managing power resources, while my teammates opted for the Fix Kit—focusing on repairs and technical prowess—and the Splash Kit, which provides support through water-based attacks and status effects.

These Kits are crafted to work in synergy, so going solo typically results in failure. Effective communication is crucial, as friendly fire is a constant risk, and maximizing the Kits’ capabilities is essential for overcoming the relentless waves of adversaries. With a limited number of respawns per team, reviving fallen comrades is vital, albeit challenging when surrounded by Hiss enemies.

Crafting Your Ideal Arsenal

"FBC: Firebreak" offers a variety of weapons, including rifles, shotguns, and pistols. Each Kit also provides three types of equipment: a tool, an augment, and an item. My initial loadout with the Jump Kit featured an Electro-Kinetic Charge Impactor, useful for electrifying foes, powering generators, and even propelling myself across large gaps. The BOOMbox item, once charged, served as an effective distraction for enemies.

The intricate details of each Kit’s equipment highlight the importance of teamwork. My ally with the Splash Kit used his Crank-Operated Fluidic Ejector to drench enemies, enhancing the effectiveness of my electric attacks. Meanwhile, our Fix Kit teammate deployed his Swivel Turret, automatically targeting and firing at any remaining adversaries.

Much like the best cooperative shooters, "FBC: Firebreak" encourages players to improvise amid increasing challenges, embracing the chaos and humor it brings. Remedy’s staff revealed our Kits’ augments with mischievous delight, and it soon became clear why. My augment, humorously named the AI19 Garden Gnome, unleashed a massive electrical storm, inadvertently electrocuting my entire team. Lesson learned.

Beyond Combat: Strategic Challenges

The game isn’t solely about battling foes. Players are tasked with specific objectives to contain the Hiss invasion, directed by Jesse Faden, the protagonist of "Control" and the director in "FBC: Firebreak."

In this game build, I accessed three out of the five Jobs available at launch. "Hot Fix" involved repairing heat fans and resealing the Maintenance Sector’s paranatural Furnace. "Paper Chase" required destroying sticky notes and surviving the sticky note monsters. "Ground Control" tasked us with eliminating Astral Leeches in Black Rock Quarry to collect irradiated pearls, which needed to be launched into orbit via a shuttle.

Each level is meticulously designed to utilize the Kits’ unique abilities. The Fix Kit’s wrench enables quick repairs to broken fans, bypassing more complex tasks required by other Kits. The Splash Kit’s Humidifier sprays healing water, removing radiation effects.

These Jobs also present terrifying moments, such as the battle against the giant sticky note boss, Sticky Ricky, requiring players to power generators before inflicting damage. The Astral Spikes haunting the Quarry add another layer of fear.

Customization and Dynamic Challenges

"FBC: Firebreak" offers a satisfying blend of gunplay and smooth controls, optimized for the DualSense wireless controller. Players can look forward to a plethora of unlockable customizable gear and cosmetics for weapons, equipment, and armor, as well as level-based perks like electrified bullets or the ability to shake off harmful effects by jumping.

The game’s Corruption Level modifier introduces Corrupted Items, adding extra challenges such as low gravity or extremely fast enemies, enhancing the unpredictability of gameplay. This system leverages movement and character status-based mechanics, ensuring "FBC: Firebreak" remains a compelling and ever-evolving experience.

As the doors to the Oldest House reopen, "FBC: Firebreak" will be available on PS5 from June 17, with day-one access for PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium members through the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog. For those still unsure, rest assured—Remedy has this all under Control.

By diving into the complexities and thrilling elements of "FBC: Firebreak," players can immerse themselves in a world where strategy, cooperation, and quick thinking are key to survival. This game promises to deliver an unforgettable experience, blending paranatural elements with high-stakes action, making it a must-play for fans of the genre.
