In the corridors of 11 Bit Studios, the sentiment that the toughest challenge for a band is surpassing their debut album resonates deeply. This feeling was at the forefront when contemplating a sequel to the critically acclaimed game, Frostpunk. Initially, the first game was not designed with a direct sequel in mind but rather to establish a rich, immersive world that could support various types of games. Fast forward over six years, and we are now on the brink of launching Frostpunk 2 for Windows PC and PC Game Pass.
Creating a New Experience
Creating a sequel always stems from the desire to bring something new to the table—be it a fresh idea, a new narrative, or an innovative gameplay experience. The challenge was to ensure that Frostpunk 2 would offer a meaningful exploration of life in a post-apocalyptic city, resonating as profoundly as the first game but on a grander, more evolved scale. Our aim was to delve into new aspects of human survival that felt both familiar and entirely novel, crafting a true and creatively necessary sequel.
It wouldn’t suffice to merely have players endure a harsher winter or a more violent storm. Such an approach wouldn’t push the boundaries or fulfill our creative ambitions. By late 2019, the vision for Frostpunk 2 began to crystallize, taking a significant leap beyond mere survival—a 30-year leap, to be precise. This time jump allowed us to envision a world where humanity has tamed the frost and now faces the challenge of grappling with ideologies and visions for the future.
The Role of the Steward
In Frostpunk 2, players assume the role of the newly elected Steward, replacing the deceased Captain. As the Steward, players must manage a fluid society—one that can flow, boil, or even ignite. Navigating the needs of various factions, players need to know when to push for votes, even if it means getting entangled in a web of conflicting promises. Sometimes, it’s better to step back and let the whims of delegates play out, observing the consequences. This sequel is less about authoritarian rule and more about political and ideological conflict.
The "society survival" aspect of the first game is significantly elevated in Frostpunk 2. To truly feel the weight of long-term decisions, the game has been scaled up. Instead of days, weeks, and months pass. Instead of constructing individual buildings, players will be building entire districts. The societal impact is also more profound in the Utopia Builder mode, akin to the Endless mode from the original game. Here, players can freely develop their cities and societies, unhindered by the narrative constraints of the campaign.
Mod Support with Frostkit
For those eager to take their creativity further, we’re introducing mod support with our Frostkit tool. Initially available in beta, this tool will eventually allow players to modify nearly every aspect of the game—from maps and models to entire scenarios. We are incredibly excited to welcome players back to the frozen world of Frostpunk 2, launching today for Windows PC, with Game Pass.
Frostpunk 2 Overview
11 Bit Studios presents Frostpunk 2, a game that elevates the city-survival genre to a new level. As the Steward, players lead their city through a cascade of calamities in a post-apocalyptic, snowy setting. The game involves building large city districts with endless needs and demands and navigating through conflicting interests of factions within the metropolis. As the city’s needs grow and factional power rises, only the player can steer society towards an uncertain future.
Key Features:
The City Grows
The world is dominated by an ever-present winter, making city expansion the only way for humanity’s survival. The metropolis needs resources like coal and oil, and its citizens require food and warmth. In Frostpunk 2, players must tackle this never-ending cycle of supply and demand.
City Districts
The city is divided into zones serving different purposes, such as housing or resource extraction. Players must build new zones and ensure that existing ones work in perfect harmony.
Special Buildings
Over time, players will need to construct places like City Hall or the Research Institute. These buildings are essential for passing laws and developing projects to ensure the city’s proper growth.
Colonies
To ensure continuous city growth, players must venture into the frostland to build extensive colonies that provide necessary resources.
Perils of Human Nature
The number of citizens steadily grows, making the task of governing and satisfying their demands increasingly challenging. The Steward must carefully navigate the interests of various groups within the city.
New Londoners
Citizens can form communities and factions, each with different ideas for the city’s future. In the Council Hall, players will propose laws and negotiate with faction delegates.
Council Hall
Gaining the support of every faction in the Council Hall is costly. One faction’s rise often breeds discontent among others, requiring careful consideration of alliances.
Towards Progress
The Research Institute is where the city’s future is forged. Each new project must be entrusted to a faction, forcing players to form strategic alliances.
Factions
Citizens want a voice in governance. Each faction has its own ideology and vision for the future, but all share an insatiable thirst for power. Choosing allies wisely in the Council Hall is crucial.
Story Mode and Utopia Builder
Frostpunk 2’s story mode introduces a multi-chapter saga set in the frozen wastes, spanning the life of the Steward. This campaign lets players feel the burden of leadership, taking responsibility for thousands of lives. The sandbox mode, Utopia Builder, offers infinite playtime for boundless social and infrastructural experiments.
Frostpunk 2 is set to offer a rich, immersive experience that challenges players to think critically about survival, governance, and the future of humanity in a frozen world. With its launch, it promises to build upon the legacy of its predecessor while introducing new elements that will captivate both new and returning players.
