NewsInstagram Launches Teen Accounts in India by Meta

In a significant move to enhance online safety for younger users, Instagram has announced the phased introduction of the Teen Accounts feature to India. This initiative is a testament to Instagram’s dedication to providing a secure and age-appropriate digital environment for teenagers. With the integration of numerous safeguards, these accounts are designed to limit unwanted interactions, bolster privacy settings, and offer parents greater oversight, thereby assuring a safer social media experience for the younger audience.

The Importance of Online Safety for Teens

In today’s digital era, adolescents navigate a world where online interactions are increasingly shaping their social experiences. However, this digital engagement is not without its challenges. Concerns about cyberbullying, exposure to inappropriate content, and privacy breaches have been voiced by parents, educators, and policymakers alike. Instagram’s Teen Accounts aim to mitigate these risks by automatically placing young users in the highest safety settings, equipping them with tools to safely explore the digital landscape.

According to Natasha Jog, Director of Public Policy India at Instagram, "At Meta, fostering a safer and more responsible digital environment is paramount. The expansion of Instagram Teen Accounts to India is a step towards strengthening protections, refining content controls, and empowering parents while ensuring a safer experience for teens."

Key Features of Teen Accounts

The Teen Account protections are tailored to address the primary concerns of parents regarding their children’s online interactions, content exposure, and time management on the platform. By default, these protections are active, requiring parental approval for any relaxation of settings for users under 16.

  1. Private Accounts: By default, teen accounts are set to private. This means that teens must approve new followers, and those who are not followers cannot see or interact with their content. This measure applies to all users under 16 and those under 18 when creating a new account.
  2. Messaging Restrictions: Teens have the most stringent messaging settings enabled, allowing them to receive messages only from people they follow or are already connected with.
  3. Sensitive Content Control: Teens are automatically placed in the most restrictive settings to limit exposure to sensitive content, including depictions of violence or cosmetic procedures, within sections like Explore and Reels.
  4. Limited Interactions: Teens can only be tagged or mentioned by people they follow. The most robust version of the anti-bullying feature, Hidden Words, is enabled by default to filter out offensive language in comments and direct message requests.
  5. Time Limit Reminders: Notifications will alert teens to exit the app after 60 minutes of daily usage.
  6. Sleep Mode: Sleep mode will be active from 10 PM to 7 AM, muting notifications and automatically sending replies to overnight direct messages.

For parents, Teen Accounts offer supervision tools that allow them to oversee their teen’s experience, including approving changes to safety settings and setting daily screen-time limits. Mansi Zaveri, Founder & CEO of Kidsstoppress.com, remarked, "Teen safety online is a growing concern for parents. Instagram’s new Teen Accounts feature is a step in the right direction. Strengthening privacy settings, limiting unwanted interactions, and adding parental supervision tools can help create a safer space for young users."

    Enhanced Supervision Tools for Parents

For teens under 16, any changes to make settings less restrictive will require parental consent. Parents can also enable supervision for older teens (16+) at any time, allowing them to review and approve changes to their teen’s safety settings. Soon, parents will have the capability to directly adjust these settings to ensure even stronger protections.

While Teen Accounts come with automatic safeguards, parents seeking more control can now access new supervision features, including:

    • Monitoring Recent Conversations: Parents can view a list of people their teen has messaged in the past seven days without seeing the content of messages.
    • Setting Daily Time Limits: Once the time limit set by parents is reached, the teen will no longer have access to Instagram.
    • Blocking Instagram During Specific Hours: Parents can restrict Instagram access at night or during specified times with a simple toggle.

      Ensuring Age-Appropriate Content for Teens

To ensure teens receive the correct protections and do not bypass age restrictions, Instagram is enhancing age verification measures. Given that some young users may misrepresent their age, additional verification steps will be necessary in certain scenarios—such as when someone attempts to create an account with an adult birthdate. This will help ensure that all teens are placed under the appropriate safety settings.

Alongside age verification, Instagram is also strengthening content protections to ensure teens are exposed only to age-appropriate material. The platform will continue to take action on content that violates Community Guidelines, with sensitive content controls set to the strictest level by default. This means that teens will have limited exposure to potentially harmful content, such as sexually suggestive material or discussions around self-harm. In many cases, even if such content is shared by someone they follow, it will be automatically hidden.

Uma Subramanian, Co-Founder & Director of the RATI Foundation, commented, "The recent updates to Instagram’s teen accounts introduce an additional layer of security and represent an incremental step toward strengthening online safety on Meta platforms. Balancing teen autonomy and online safety remains a complex challenge, and this initiative is a move in that direction. With effective implementation and oversight, such updates have the potential to drive meaningful improvements in teen safety online."

Overall, Instagram’s expansion of Teen Accounts to India marks a significant advancement in online safety for teens. By providing more robust protections and empowering parents with enhanced supervision tools, Instagram is taking meaningful steps towards creating a safer digital environment for young users. As these features roll out, they offer a promising framework for how social media platforms can better safeguard their youngest users while balancing the need for privacy and autonomy.
