It began with a simple fascination with the idea of conversing with computers. As a curious student in Chile, Daniel attempted to create a chatbot without any formal programming knowledge. Reflecting on those early experiences, he recalls, "I thought I could interact with the computer, and somehow, I got it to respond to a few prompts. It gave me butterflies. It sounds cliché, but I’ve always wanted to talk to computers."

This early passion, coupled with years of rigorous academic and scientific training, has guided Acuna across various disciplines and continents. Today, he is a faculty member at the University of Colorado Boulder, contributing to their innovative online Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence program. With a background that spans a bachelor’s degree in computer science, a PhD from the University of Minnesota, and a postdoctoral fellowship in neuroscience, Acuna has dedicated his career to understanding the intersection of human and machine learning. His conclusion? AI is far from just a fleeting trend.

Initially skeptical of the idea that an online degree could match the rigor and quality of an on-campus program, Acuna’s perspective shifted as he recognized the potential for broader access. "This technology is going to impact every field," he notes. "Restricting access to only people who live in Boulder, who can block a large chunk of their lives to study in a traditional program, is not enough. We need to be teaching people everywhere."

The online format of the program opens doors for students worldwide to acquire advanced AI skills applicable in diverse fields such as healthcare, finance, education, and science. Notably, the program is accessible to students without prior experience in machine learning. As Acuna points out, "If you like numbers and quantitative work, this is a great course. You don’t need a background in AI or machine learning. We’ll assume you’re starting with the basics."

When asked about these "basics," Acuna elaborates, "Critical thinking, curiosity, math—you cannot avoid math, linear algebra, calculus, and probability." He adds with a chuckle, "It also helps to know how to think about ML, how to make a machine learn without explicitly telling it what to do, and you need to understand the importance of data and how to evaluate the performance of a machine once it learns."

Purposeful and Realistic AI Education

Acuna’s teaching extends beyond imparting technical knowledge. He leads CU Boulder’s Machine Learning Specialization, a foundational component of the MS in AI, as well as programs in Data Science and Computer Science. These courses form part of the performance-based admissions offered by the MS in AI degree, allowing students to demonstrate their potential through practical application rather than traditional entrance exams.

In his classes, Acuna combines traditional assessments, collaborative discussions, and hands-on projects to provide a comprehensive learning experience. "It’s going to be a fun course. People will learn a lot, and they’ll actually be able to apply it to their own fields and lives," he shares. "Things come and go in this field. I was very skeptical of neural networks at first. But the tools we have now—large language models, multi-modal AI—they’ve revolutionized what’s possible."

Looking ahead, Acuna envisions a future where AI is not just a tool used in niche areas but a partner in the learning process. "Very soon, we’re going to be using AI to help teach us. In my field of science, we will use it as an assistant or even a colleague. Human agents working alongside AI agents. It’s hard to stop this progress. There will be challenges, but we need to deal with them, speak up, and help shape this future."

For students considering the online MS in AI, Acuna offers valuable advice: be open to failure and learn from it. "You’ll make mistakes. But then the next week, you won’t make them again. And that means something good is happening."
