Prominent Award Recognizes Samsung’s Dedication to Sustainability and Environmental Stewardship

In a significant stride towards sustainable innovation, Samsung Electronics recently announced that its Galaxy S25 smartphone has received the esteemed 2025 Design for Recycling® Award. This accolade, bestowed by the Recycled Materials Association (ReMA), underscores Samsung’s pioneering contributions to eco-friendly product design and its commitment to reducing environmental impact through innovative recycling practices.

The Recycled Materials Association is a reputable industry body focused on advancing recycling processes and encouraging circular economy practices. The award highlights Samsung’s strategic initiatives to enhance the use of recycled materials, thereby conserving the Earth’s limited natural resources. Notably, the Galaxy S25 is the first in the Galaxy series to incorporate recycled cobalt. Cobalt is a vital component used in batteries, and Samsung’s Circular Battery Supply Chain has introduced a transformative approach to sourcing this material. Through this system, cobalt is reclaimed from old Galaxy devices and other unused batteries, which minimizes the demand for newly mined cobalt and promotes material reuse.

Daniel Araujo, Vice President and Head of the Sustainability Management Office at Samsung Electronics, expressed the company’s dedication to sustainability. He emphasized that Samsung’s efforts encompass the entire lifecycle of their products, from initial design through to usage and eventual disposal. Araujo described the Galaxy S25 as a significant step forward in Samsung’s journey to integrate circularity into its products and operations, merging cutting-edge technology with a deep sense of environmental responsibility. He reiterated Samsung’s ongoing commitment to fostering a sustainable future for coming generations.

In addition to its innovative battery recycling measures, the Galaxy S25 integrates eight different recycled materials into its design. These include aluminum, rare earth elements like neodymium, and steel. For the first time, recycled materials have been incorporated into the device’s armor aluminum frame, ensuring that every external component of the Galaxy S25 contains at least one recycled element. The packaging also reflects this commitment, as the Galaxy S25 series is packaged in boxes made entirely from recycled paper, eliminating the use of single-use plastics.

Further supporting its sustainability goals, Samsung has introduced a Self-Repair program that encourages consumers to repair their devices, thus extending their lifespan and reducing electronic waste. This initiative is part of Samsung’s broader environmental objectives, which include transitioning to 100% renewable energy across its global operations by 2027 and incorporating at least one recycled material in every component of every mobile product by 2030. Samsung is investing in the development of eco-friendly materials that do not compromise on strength, aesthetics, or durability.

The Recycled Materials Association’s President, Robin Wiener, commended Samsung for its leadership in integrating recycling principles into every phase of the Galaxy S25’s development. Wiener noted that Samsung’s use of a variety of recycled materials demonstrates a strong commitment to designing everyday products with an eye towards innovation and environmental stewardship.

The official award ceremony is scheduled for May 14 at the ReMA Convention in San Diego, California, where industry leaders will gather to celebrate advancements in recycling and sustainable design practices.
