Bespoke AI Refrigerators Enhance Home Experiences with Innovative Software Updates

Samsung Electronics has unveiled a groundbreaking software update designed to elevate the functionality of its Bespoke AI Refrigerators, which are set to launch in 2025. This update is part of Samsung’s continuous efforts to enhance user experiences by integrating cutting-edge technology into everyday appliances. At the heart of this update is the Voice ID feature, powered by Samsung’s voice assistant, Bixby, which was introduced at the "Welcome to Bespoke AI" global launch event earlier this year.

"Our primary goal for this year is to realize an AI Home that adapts intuitively to the user," stated Jeong Seung Moon, Executive Vice President and Head of the R&D Team for Digital Appliances Business at Samsung Electronics. "We aim to enhance the user experience through continuous software upgrades for existing products, taking us one step closer to a true AI Home experience."

Unveiling the Voice ID Feature: A Step Towards Personalized Home Appliances

The newly introduced Voice ID feature is a multi-voice recognition function that can identify and differentiate between users’ voices. This functionality allows for a tailored user experience as the refrigerator can distinguish between various registered voices, whether from the appliance itself or a Galaxy mobile device. This feature is particularly beneficial in households where multiple users interact with shared appliances, offering a personalized experience for each person.

For instance, upon recognizing a user’s voice, Bixby can seamlessly switch to that person’s Samsung account. This enables the user to access personal schedules on the calendar or browse through their stored photos using simple voice commands. Additionally, users can trigger an alarm on their mobile device, even if it is in silent mode, to quickly locate it.

Furthermore, the Voice ID feature facilitates smooth interactions for users who rely on vision enhancements on their Galaxy mobile phones. Without needing to manually switch accounts, Bixby can automatically adjust the refrigerator’s display settings, such as color inversion or grayscale, to match those of the user’s mobile phone.

Enhancing User Interaction with Innovative Activation Options

Samsung has also introduced a new method to activate Bixby on the refrigerator’s screen. Previously, users could activate the voice assistant by either clicking the Bixby icon on the display or through voice commands. Now, when the screen is off, users have the additional option to wake Bixby by double-tapping the display. This flexibility allows users to choose their preferred method of interaction, enhancing the overall user experience.

As part of the rollout, the update will initially be applied to Bespoke AI Refrigerators equipped with the AI Family Hub, with the general availability following the completion of the latest software update on AI Family Hub screens or via SmartThings. Samsung plans to gradually extend this update to the Bespoke AI refrigerators featuring AI Home technology by the second quarter of 2025.

Expanding Entertainment Options with Samsung TV Plus

In addition to the Voice ID feature, the update also expands the service area for Samsung TV Plus on Bespoke AI refrigerators with AI Home. Previously limited to South Korea and the United States, this service will now be available in Canada, Brazil, Australia, Mexico, and India. This expansion means that users can enjoy a wider range of entertainment options directly from their kitchen, enhancing the multifunctionality of their appliances.

Understanding the Technical Aspects

The Bespoke AI Refrigerators with AI Family Hub and AI Home screens are at the forefront of Samsung’s smart appliance offerings. These appliances are not just about keeping food cold; they are about integrating seamlessly into the modern smart home ecosystem. Here’s a closer look at the technical aspects:

  1. Voice ID Registration: Users must register their Samsung Account on the refrigerator’s screen in advance. Voice ID can be registered on either the refrigerator or Galaxy mobile devices, primarily supporting Galaxy S24 and subsequent models.
  2. Bixby Voice Assistant: Bixby is Samsung’s proprietary Internet of Things (IoT) voice assistant. It supports various languages and accents and provides a range of functionalities depending on the country and device specifics. A Samsung account and network connection are required to utilize Bixby.
  3. Calendar and Gallery Integration: To use the calendar feature, users need to either register their schedule directly on the refrigerator or link their mobile phone calendar. The refrigerator supports syncing with Google or Microsoft calendars. Similarly, the gallery feature is available for users who have stored photos in OneDrive via the Samsung Gallery app on their mobile devices.
  4. SmartThings Find: To enable certain features like locating a phone, users must set up presets in the SmartThings Find app.
  5. AI Home Screens: AI Home refers to the 7’’ or 9’’ LCD screens on the refrigerators. Not all services available on AI Home use AI, but certain functions utilize AI-based algorithms to improve accuracy over time.

A Glimpse into the Future of Smart Homes

Samsung’s initiative to continuously update its Bespoke AI Refrigerators is a step towards creating a genuinely intuitive AI Home experience. By combining personalized features with expanded entertainment options, Samsung is paving the way for smarter, more integrated home environments.

The introduction of features like Voice ID and enhanced Bixby functionality demonstrates Samsung’s commitment to innovation and user-centric design. As these technologies continue to evolve, the potential for creating more seamless and efficient smart home experiences becomes increasingly tangible.

For those interested in the future of smart appliances, Samsung’s Bespoke AI Refrigerators represent a significant leap forward. By integrating advanced AI capabilities into everyday household items, Samsung is redefining the role of appliances in our daily lives, making them essential components of the modern smart home.
