The ongoing London Tech Week serves as a testament to this ambition, as NVIDIA, a major player in the tech industry, joins forces with top UK companies to lay the groundwork for a sovereign AI infrastructure.
Building the Foundation for Sovereign AI
NVIDIA, in collaboration with prominent UK firms, has inaugurated the first-ever UK Sovereign AI Industry Forum. This initiative seeks to unite leading businesses such as Babcock, BAE Systems, BT, National Grid, and Standard Chartered in an effort to fortify the nation’s economic security. The goal is to advance sovereign AI infrastructure, thereby accelerating the growth of the UK’s AI startup ecosystem.
Peter Kyle, the UK’s Secretary of State for Science, Innovation, and Technology, emphasized the country’s aspirations to innovate in the AI sector. "We have big plans when it comes to developing the next wave of AI innovations here in the UK," he stated. "Not only so we can deliver the economic growth needed for our Plan for Change, but maintain our position as a global leader." Central to this strategy is ensuring robust infrastructure to support AI development.
A Thriving AI Hub
The UK has already established itself as a leading hub for AI in Europe, with a significant number of newly funded AI startups and substantial private investment. Since 2013, over $28 billion has been funneled into the sector, underscoring its rapid growth. Regions with a strong AI and data center presence have shown consistent economic growth, with potential to add billions to the national economic output.
In response to this burgeoning opportunity, cloud provider Nscale announced its commitment to deploying UK AI infrastructure with 10,000 NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs by the end of 2026. This facility aims to position the UK as a global AI powerhouse, fostering innovation, job creation, and a thriving domestic AI ecosystem.
Furthermore, cloud provider Nebius is contributing to the region’s momentum by launching its first AI factory in the UK. The introduction of 4,000 NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs will provide scalable, high-performance AI capacity, supporting research, academia, and public services, including the NHS.
Bridging the Skills Gap
A critical component of the UK’s AI strategy is addressing the skills gap. NVIDIA is supporting the government’s national skills drive by training developers in AI. The establishment of a new NVIDIA AI Technology Center in the UK will offer hands-on training in AI, data science, and accelerated computing. Moreover, Barclays Eagle Labs’ launch of an Innovation Hub in London will support AI and deep tech startups. NVIDIA will facilitate this growth by offering startups access to its Inception program, which provides advanced tools and training.
The Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology has also announced a partnership with NVIDIA to advance AI development in telecommunications. This collaboration will equip leading UK universities with powerful AI tools, 6G research platforms, and training resources to enhance research and development of AI-native wireless networks.
The Role of Universities in AI Advancement
Universities play a pivotal role in the UK’s AI strategy. The JADE consortium, led by Oxford University and comprising 20 universities and the Turing Institute, utilizes NVIDIA technologies to propel AI development and safety. At University College London, researchers are creating a digital twin of the human body with the help of NVIDIA technology. Meanwhile, the Isambard-AI supercomputer at the University of Bristol, built on NVIDIA Grace Hopper Superchips, is advancing AI safety, climate modeling, and next-generation science.
