GeneralOrion Browser by Kagi Crashing or Not Loading? Fix It Fast

Orion Browser by Kagi has picked up a loyal following on macOS, iPadOS, and iOS thanks to its WebKit foundation, native performance, and support for both Chrome and Firefox extensions. But a growing number of users in the Apple Support Community are reporting recurring problems: the browser crashes on launch, freezes when loading certain pages, drains battery unexpectedly, or refuses to sync between devices. This is a widespread issue affecting users across Apple Silicon Macs, Intel Macs, and iPhones running iOS 17 and later.

If Orion is misbehaving on your Apple device, the good news is that most of these problems stem from a handful of common causes and can be resolved without waiting for the next update. This guide walks through the confirmed fixes, additional solutions worth trying, and when it’s time to escalate the issue.

What Causes This Issue

Orion Browser is built on Apple’s WebKit engine — the same engine that powers Safari — which means it inherits both Safari’s speed and its quirks. When Orion breaks down on Apple hardware, the root cause usually falls into one of these buckets:

  • Extension conflicts: Orion’s ability to run Chromium and Firefox extensions is powerful but experimental. A single incompatible extension can crash the entire browser or cause runaway CPU usage.
  • Corrupted cache or profile data: Cached web data, cookies, and browsing history stored locally can become corrupted, especially after a forced quit or a system update.
  • iCloud Keychain sync errors: Orion uses iCloud Keychain for password sync, and authentication hiccups can cascade into broader launch failures.
  • Outdated builds: Orion is still evolving, and older builds often contain bugs that have already been patched in newer releases.
  • macOS or iOS compatibility gaps: A recent OS update can break WebKit integrations until the browser catches up.
  • Full Disk Access or permissions: On macOS, missing permissions can prevent Orion from writing to its own container, causing silent crashes.

Step-by-Step Fixes

Work through these fixes in order. Most users in the Apple Support Community report resolution within the first four steps.

  1. Force quit and relaunch Orion. On macOS, press Option + Command + Escape, select Orion, and click Force Quit. On iPhone or iPad, swipe up from the bottom (or double-click the Home button) and swipe Orion off the app switcher. Relaunch and test.
  2. Update to the latest Orion build. Open Orion, click the Orion menu in the menu bar, and choose Check for Updates. On iOS, open the App Store, tap your profile, and pull down to refresh available updates. Many crash reports circulating in community threads were resolved by moving to the current release channel.
  3. Disable all extensions, then re-enable them one at a time. Go to Orion Settings, open the Extensions tab, and toggle every extension off. Restart the browser. If it runs cleanly, re-enable extensions one by one until the culprit surfaces. Chromium extensions built for aggressive tab management or ad blocking are the most common troublemakers.
  4. Clear cache and website data. In Orion, go to Settings, then Privacy, and choose Clear Browsing Data. Select cached images and files, cookies, and site data, then confirm. Restart Orion. This resolves the majority of page-loading and freezing issues.
  5. Reset Orion to defaults. If crashes persist, use the built-in reset option under Settings > Advanced > Reset Orion. This keeps bookmarks and passwords but wipes site data, extensions, and preferences.
  6. Reinstall Orion cleanly. On macOS, drag Orion from the Applications folder to the Trash, then delete leftover data at ~/Library/Application Support/Orion and ~/Library/Caches/com.kagi.kagimacOS. Download a fresh copy from the official Orion site. On iOS, delete the app, restart your device, and reinstall from the App Store.

Additional Solutions

If the standard steps didn’t resolve the issue, these deeper fixes address less obvious causes.

Check macOS permissions. Open System Settings > Privacy & Security. Confirm Orion has permission for Camera, Microphone, Location, and — critically — Full Disk Access if you use extensions that need it. Missing permissions can cause silent failures that look like crashes.

Toggle iCloud sync. If Orion hangs at launch or fails to load your tabs across devices, sign out of iCloud sync inside Orion Settings, quit the app, wait 30 seconds, then sign back in. This forces a fresh handshake with iCloud servers and clears most sync-related errors.

Disable experimental WebKit features. Orion exposes several experimental flags under Settings > Advanced. If you’ve enabled any experimental toggles, turn them off. Bleeding-edge WebKit features occasionally break page rendering, video playback, and login flows on sites using strict content security policies.

Test in a new user profile. On macOS, create a fresh user account from System Settings > Users & Groups and launch Orion from that account. If Orion runs perfectly there, the problem is tied to your primary user profile — usually a corrupted preference file. Delete com.kagi.kagimacOS.plist from ~/Library/Preferences in your main account.

Check for a memory or storage bottleneck. Orion is lighter than Chromium browsers, but low free RAM or a nearly full SSD can still trigger instability. Open Activity Monitor on macOS and confirm you have at least 2 GB of free memory and 10 GB of free disk space.

Reboot in Safe Mode. On Apple Silicon Macs, shut down, then press and hold the power button until startup options appear. Select your drive while holding Shift and click Continue in Safe Mode. Launch Orion. If it runs stably, a login item or kernel extension in your normal boot environment is interfering.

Switch DNS providers. If Orion loads some sites but stalls on others, your DNS may be at fault. Try switching to 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8 in System Settings > Network > Wi-Fi > Details > DNS.

When to Contact Apple Support

Because Orion is a third-party app, Apple Support won’t troubleshoot the browser itself. However, you should reach out to Apple if:

  • Orion crashes are accompanied by system-wide freezes, kernel panics, or spontaneous restarts.
  • The issue appeared immediately after a macOS or iOS update and other apps show similar instability.
  • You suspect a hardware fault — for example, Orion crashes only under sustained load, alongside overheating or fan spikes.
  • iCloud Keychain sync is failing across multiple apps, not just Orion.

For Orion-specific bugs, the developer’s support channel at Kagi is the right destination. Include your macOS or iOS version, Orion build number, and a crash log from Console.app.

FAQ

Is Orion Browser safe to use on my Mac or iPhone? Yes. Orion is built on WebKit and is sandboxed like any other App Store or notarised macOS application. It also emphasises privacy with no telemetry by default.

Why does Orion drain my battery faster than Safari? Usually an extension or a background tab running heavy JavaScript. Disable extensions and check the tab activity indicator in Orion to find the offender.

Can I import my Safari bookmarks and passwords into Orion? Yes. Orion offers direct import from Safari, Chrome, and Firefox during first-run setup, and again anytime via Settings.

Will reinstalling Orion delete my bookmarks? Only if you don’t have iCloud sync enabled. Turn on sync before reinstalling to preserve everything.

Does Orion work on older Macs? Orion supports macOS 11 Big Sur and later. Performance is best on Apple Silicon, but Intel Macs are supported.
