What is Hibernate Mode?

Whereas, in hibernate mode, all the progress and Opened documents are saved to a Hard disc/drive.

Difference between Sleep mode and Hibernate mode:

  1. The Files in sleep mode are saved to temporary memory whereas, in Hibernate mode, they are saved to permanent memory.
  2. In Hibernate mode, the PC runs on Zero Power. On the other hand, the PC consumes power to run on Sleep mode.

When should you use these modes?

You can use any of these modes ( Sleep mode and Hibernate mode ), depending on your situation. But for more clarity:

  • Use hibernate mode when you are staying away from the PC for a longer period and don’t want to shut the applications completely.
  • Use Sleep Mode when you are away from your PC for a shorter period and Don’t want to shut the running applications and open documents completely.
  • You can also use Hibernate mode when your PC is out of power and you don’t want to shut the system completely( as shutting down will close all the programs and open documents, applications entirely. In short, if you shut down your PC without saving the work you have done, all your progress will be lost).

  2. Allows you to resume your work from where you left.
  3. During hibernate mode, your PC does not need the power to run.
  4. All your opened documents and applications are saved to the Hard disc( permanent memory).

Steps To turn on Hibernate Mode On Windows 11:

To turn on hibernate mode on windows 11, you first need to add this option to the Start Menu. To do that, just follow a few easy and simple steps:

  • Tap the Search icon on the taskbar.
  • In the Search box, type Control Panel.
  • Under the best match, Select Control Panel
  • Select System And Security from the various options given under Control Panel.
  • Then click on  Change What The Power Buttons Do under Power Options from the various options under System And Security
  • Below Define power buttons and turn on password protection, tap Change Settings that are currently unavailable.
  • Next, Check the box Next to Hibernate option under the Shutdown settings.
  • Then Tap Save Changes at the bottom.

After that, exit the Control Panel.


Following these steps, you will be able to see Hibernate option whenever you Click the Power button under the Start Menu. It will be seen among many other options including Sleep, Shut Down, and Restart.

Now, you will be able to Turn On Hibernate mode anytime you.

  • Click on the Start icon from the taskbar.
  • Tap the Power button on the Start menu
  • Click on the Hibernate Option.

Steps to disable Hibernate mode On windows 11:

  1. Click the Search icon in the taskbar
  2. In the Search box Click And enter Control Panel
  3.  Select Control Panel under the Best Match
  4. Then, click on System and Security from the various options given under Control Panel
  5. Click Change what the power buttons do under the Power Buttons on the System and Security screen.
  6. Click Change Settings that are currently unavailable under Define power buttons and turn on password protection
  7. Further, Deselect the box Next to Hibernate option under the Shutdown settings.
  8. Then Click on Save Changes
  9. Exit the Control Panel by clicking the Cross icon on the top-right corner of the screen.

Now, by clicking on the power button under Start Menu, you will notice that Hibernate option has been removed.

Hibernate Mode and Shut Down:

Hibernate mode is quite similar to Shut down. The key difference between the Hibernate mode and Shut Down is that Hibernate saves all your progress and work to a volatile memory before shutting down the desktop or laptop. But, when you shut down your PC without saving your works, you will not able to resume where you left off.

( Volatile Memory: It is a type of memory that keeps all the progress stored even after the removal of power from the system.)
